Quick Question

I have to be on the 6 month hold (per my insurance) and I don't have to lose a certain amount of weight..just not gain any...I'm wondering when do they put you on the pre-surgery diet? Is a week before, a month? My Dr. said he'd prefer I lost as much as possible because since I am thicker around my middle, my BMI jumps about 20 points and the surgery is more dangerous. I just want to know how much time I have before they start really monitoring my pre-surg weight loss...

Every surgeon is different.  If you mean the pre-op liquid diet, many have to do 2 weeks, some 1, some not at all.  As for just learning the basics and starting to eat post-op style pre-op, mostly that should start when you are meeting with your nutritionist monthly.  Usually that's part of the insurance requirement and the surgeon's requirement.

It is. And I've met with her once already. All she wants me to work on is chewing each bite 20/30 times and re-arranging/re-stocking my kitchen to work best for me before and after my surgery. Nothing has really been discussed about losing any weight since my liver was a normal size. I guess I should start changing up my diet as much as possible now so it won't be such a shock to my system when my surgery date gets closer...the butterflies in my stomach have made it hard to eat anyway!

 think the most important things are eating protein first, then veggies, start to eliminate white carbs and sugar, and don't drink for 30 minutes after eating. maybe your nutritionist does these things in stages, and your first visit was just the intro.

I'm a Sweets girl so I've been trying to cut out any additional sugars and treats..no more candy bars or ice cream..I planned on cutting carbs like bread and pasta next month...figures stages would be better than cold turkey...

good plan.  I also tapered off my soda and caffeine.  It's actually nice to have the time to make the changes that need to be permanent.  Good for you.  This is an exciting time!

I'm so jealous of you guys who had a good nutritionist!  The waste of time at my surgeouns office handed out some papers and told us to read them. When I asked a question, she told me to read my packet!  Uhhh, no. For my $75 you'll answer some questions!!  Never saw her again. I see the one at the hospital and another docs office where they have a support group. I digress!  Yes, all docs have different plans!

OMG I have a terrible nutritionist!  Straight out of school.  The nurse at my surgeon's office, however, is very knowledgable.  But mostly I rely on this sight and research.  I met with my NUT 3 times as required and that was it.  She lost me when she didn't know that frozen foods have a lot of sodium.

Geez, where did she get that degree??  Mine was just nasty and comes across as someone who hates fat people!  She just does not care. Going thru the motions, waiting til retirement. What a horrible way to spend 40 hrs a week!  Docs advice totally different, new school and da' bomb!!  Love him!
