What questions does the psychiatrist ask during preoperative clearance?
It's entirely dependent on what the insurance company wants to know. Here is what we went over in mine:
1- what are you expectations for your body post-surgery?
2- How do you think the surgery and resulting weight loss will affect your love life?
3- What are your expectations for eating going forward?
4- Do you have a healthy support network?
5- Do you have healthy coping skills?
6- Do you have a history of following the directives of physicians or seeking help when needed?
7- Do you have a history of shirking responsibilities or not following through with care?
8- Do you have a history of suicidal thoughts?
9- Are you at least 6 months out from your last dangerous episode?
10- Does the psych, based on your interview and any testing that they feel might be necessary for this procedure, feel that you are a good candidate for the surgery?
Mine was a two visit session with a variation of the MMPI.
If anything, I think that really long test was help the surgeron and NUT get along with ME and have a generalized mechanism of how to motivate me along shoudl I stumble.
RNY Surgery: 12/31/2013;
Current weight (2/27/2015) 139lbs, ~14% body fat
Three pounds below Goal!!! Yay !
It's not a test you can cram for - it's to determine whether or not your head is ready for this surgery. It is more important to your success long term than whether your body is ready.
Answer the questions truthfully and don't worry about tripping up - that is not the point of this part of the process.
We veterans have seen more people struggle because they are not mentally prepared than for any other reason

I go tomorrow for my preoperative psychiatrist appt...I am wondering what types of questions they ask
It's important to remember that "it's not a counseling session"! You'll get asked a lot of questions and, as several posters advised, answer directly and truthfully. Go in with confidence and determination. You'll do fine. You are on your way!
