Does anybody else developed Thyroid problems after bypass
hi, it's been 2 years since my bypass and I have been doing very well. My blood work was great for all the vitamins and b12 etc. My PCM was testing my Thyroid since I still have hair loss, fatigue and I am always constipated even with stool softeners. I have to go in to see him just got a call today to make an appointment my question is has anybody else experienced those problems 2 years after the bypass and how did that go I am a little concerned. My hai rloss is driving me crazy I was hoping that it would get better after a year
I already had underactive thyroid before my surgery and my TSH went up (got worse) a few months after my RNY. My meds were adjusted appropriately and now my levels are good again. Try to see an endocrinologist. Good luck.

Many people have low thyroid before they have their gastric bypass surgery, and a few people to develop it afterward. It really isn't a big deal because it's easily controlled with thyroid supplements (e.g., Synthroid) and regular lab work.
I have been on Synthroid since 1990.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
Keep in mind, too, that all three items you mentioned are often experienced by everyone after surgery, even if they don't have any thyroid issues. Surgery is hard on the body (and since you're trying to heal when you're consuming very little nutrition, the healing can take longer) hence the fatigue; hair loss from months 3-9 from teelogen effluvium happens to almost everyone; constipation is the result of not enough fat and fiber in the early postop diet (and can be made worse by calicum and iron supplements).
