Liquids....Having A Little Trouble Getting Them In

I think I just need to hear again that it's normal. I'm only a week out from surgery so still really tired at times. Some days have been better than others but have not yet reached the 48oz goal my surgeon wants especially if I sleep in or take a nap during the day. My first post-op is Wednesday. My two biggest fears are dumping and dehydration and I'm trying to avoid both. I get to start full liquids Tuesday so I'm hoping I can get to the 48. I've read it took some people about 6 weeks post-op to get to the 64oz goal and for liquids to be easier getting in. Pretty typical?

I find it easier to drink flavored water(crystal light) than to drink plan water at times. If I am really thirsty drinking plan water is easier. Early out warm drinks seem to go better than ice cold ones. I was very tired that first week out. It does get better as the weeks keep going. I think once you start getting more than clear liquids that helps. I was also told the more fluids the more energy you will get...so try try try to drink drink drink. Keep a drink with you all your waking hours.

You need to do better with fluids. Even 48 oz is very low. 64 should be a minimum. Dehydration is no fun. Kidney stones are even less fun.

Get the water in a drop at a time if you have to. If you need an IV it will go in one drop at a time, it's a lot easier to do it by mouth.

I also had the same worry, and still struggle with it today (I'm 10 weeks post-op).  I was trying to get 50-60 oz of fluids in right after surger, but at the 4 week point it all started coming back up.  I reported this to my surgeon and he was flabbergasted with me!  He said (and it's in my paperwork, too) that at that early stage I should've been only working on getting in 30 oz.  I was totally overdoing it.  So, I backed off to just 30 oz, and though I'm still very thirsty some days, I feel sooooo much better.  At my last check up my doc said I could start increasing the water and fluids as I feel comfortable, but again, not to pu**** to the point where it starts coming back up or causes discomfort.  I'm doing pretty well at about 40 oz now, and am slowly trying to increase it.

Bottom line, don't overdo it!

Girl, it's gonna be ok!! You got this!

I'm now 7 yrs post-op and had the same fears as you...and many of us have had. Keep drinking as much as you can.  I know it's not much right now, but as much as you can will suffice.  Your stomach is very small, and can only fit a few ounces at a time.  Make sure you are following the 30/30 rule.  Keep taking your vitamins, and keep moving/exercising and keep watching what you eat.

All of this takes time, and learning how to drink/eat will take some time as well, but you will get to that point where it just comes natural.

I wish you the best of luck on your weight-loss journey.

Stay blessed and always encouraged.

Thank you everyone. Today is a little better. I have my water bottle in hand and since I'm still at home I'm sipping every time a commercial comes on roughly every 5-10 minutes. Hopefully I can establish that habit before I go back to work. Plain water is still No Bueno but with a little Crystal Light & tea its doable. I have my first post-op tomorrow and it will definitely be one of my topics to discuss.
