Agreed. Some people are ALL opinions and NO facts. Just because they say it with confidence doesn't make it true. A scientific study might help convince me. I guess I will listen to the Mayo Clinic Bariatrics staff... Oh.... and every successful vet who tells me that they lose weight more slowly when they eat too many simple carbs.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17023708
RESULTS: "Weight loss with 60% or 40% of energy as carbohydrate (5.7 +/- 0.7 or 6.9 +/- 0.7 kg, respectively) did not differ significantly..."
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23671029
RESULTS: "Participants lost an average of 5.8 kg during the hypocaloric phase, with no differences in the amount of weight loss with diet assignment (P = 0.39)."
http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa0804748
RESULTS: "There was no effect on weight loss of carbohydrate level through the target range of 35 to 65%."
Obviously intervention studies have more power than observational studies.
Remember that there are many factors that can go into a final recommendation beyond just the science and biology.
I followed the plan of under 800 calories, under 40 carbs, 100g protein and didn't worry about fats. I didn't eat fruits, vegetables, rice, potatoes, bread or pasta during my weight loss phase. I am in my early 40's and lost 100lbs in six months to reach goal. If what you are doing isn't working for you then try something else. I personally like to listen to the long-term vets who have BTDT and have had the success that I want to have.
