Breakfast: How important is "the most important meal of the day?"

For so long, it has been drilled into me, that eating a good breakfast is important. Is this research based?
I find that I am not hungry in the morning. I seem to do better if I start out with some warm liquids, to get my fluids started, and my vitamins. If I have something like broth, or if I add some soy milk or coconut milk to my warm herbal tea, then I do not feel hungry, and I do really well. I
It seems like once I start eating the real food, it triggers something in me, and I want more than I need.
Thoughts?

Thanks. I do find I need to eat a little before I feel strong hunger, or I do risk overeating. Thank you for that reminder.

I am almost 5 years out and I still wake up with a little nausea. I think it may be from going 8 hours without fluids. I can't eat breakfast. I add a little protein powder to my morning coffee and I'm good until lunch time.
I often don't start real food until noon or 1PM... tea, water, protein drink, more water... then food.
