I don't know if it is the "best" but I love this from my personal experience. KAL Magnesium Glycinate 400mg. Glycinate is supposed to give less gastric distress and I find that to be true.

I've been taking 750mg magnesium oxide with Miralax and colace for my constipation for over 3.5 years.  My recent level was in normal range. I read recently in a post on OH, that we absorbed magnesium citrate better, if needed for deficiency.

Avoid magnesium oxide.  Other than being a good laxative, it's nearly useless as it's not readily bioavailable to our bodies (manufacturers only put it in multivitamins because it's so cheap).

Just about any other magnesium will work better for you.  I personally do very well with magnesium citrate.

I tried magnesium oxide my first time around, and I would definitely agree with aesposito - it had no noticeable effect at all.  I've had a lot more success with magnesium glycinate, and then even more when I switched to a liquid magnesium supplement.  I assume this is because the liquid vitamins are easier for the body to absorb, and I've always had a problem absorbing nutrients from my diet anyway.
