As your doctor about "the card" stating you are a people who had RNY. You might want to do a practice run, at home, for the menu choices. Being prepared for the night out dinner helps. Small bites and lots of savoring the taste... chew-chew-chew should help. Take your time and save some to take home.

Some places will let you order off the kid's or senior's menu without a fuss, but I've found the kid's selections at a lot of places to be either fried stuff or pasta.  One place we went to for breakfast had a 2 egg omelet on the kid's menu, but I wasn't allowed to order that.  I asked for the regular omelet made with 2 eggs instead, but they still made it regular sized and the waitress's eyes got kind of big when she saw I'd left over half of it on the plate.

The appetizer strategy is one I've used quite often.  I'll order sliders and then just eat the tiny patties with the pickle.  :D  Every now and then I'll do a salad if it comes with a protein and soups and chilis are good too.  I also try to order things that will be good as leftovers.  Getting things to share is a good strategy too. This weekend I was out of town at a comic book convention and in the snack bar they had nice wraps with ham, cheese and salami cut in half, so I was able to share one of those with my friend.  

Remember to take it slow and be aware that your eyes are quite literally larger than your stomach!
