I have BCBSRI also. I have found that it depends on what type of surgery you are trying to get. I have been fighting for a VSG and I have been denied various times. I am now trying for the DS and I am waiting to see what happens.

Good Luck!

Hey Cyn,

I wish you weren't going through any pain. You don't deserve it.

Does Dr. P think it could be a stricture? You may end up with an endoscopy. Sometimes the scar tissue around our stoma and/or pouch can cause some pulling that can be painful when our pouch gets stretched. It's a fairly simple fix. Hopefully, that's all it is.

I hope you feel better soon!

Love ya!

Jules

I had my banding surgery paid for by CIGNA / Tufts Health net through Dr Vithianathan's office (Miriam), I also work in MA and live in RI.  The devil is in the details of the contract your company signed.  All specifics are likely to vary contract to contract and you'll want to get them squared away through your companies' HR vendor before digging in and moving forward.

I had BC/BS Blue Chip and had no problems gaining approval.  I had notes from 3 Dr.s recommending the surgery.  It was approved right away.

Hello there.  At the time of my surgery, I had BC/BS of RI through Lifespan.  The staff in Dr. Sax's office who do all the approval and scheduling work told me they usually have very good luck working with BC/BS and indeed they were right.  I had approval within the week of when they submitted me.  I also found calling customer service directly when I was just exploring the option of WLS was positive.  Even at that early point they were able to tell me I would be approved.
Best of wishes on your WLS journey.
~ Sandy

Before anyone even says it.. I know, it's been forever. So a quick Readers Digest update. I am living in RI full-time, working crazy as always..about 50+ hours depending on the week. I'm doing about the same.. hovering around 192. But, don't feel badly...I feel great. I haven't been this weight since i was in Middle School. My lowest being 187 and highest 306 (documented anyhow) I don't exercise as much as I should be.. but do walk 3 times a day with my Greyhound. I hope this finds everyone well! I don't even know the last time I have seen anyone from here, besides seeing DD at the Pet Expo, and you looked awesome BTW! Feel free to email me at panda766@aol anytime to keep in touch. Just write something catchy in the subject line so I will open it up! Hope everyone had an awesome summer... be well!!

I've got BCBS RI (Healthmate, to be specific, which is the PPO), and was approved in something like 36 hours.  Their bariatric surgery policy is on their website.  I used to have the link -- can't seem to find it anymore.  Log in to it and see if you can find it.
