I talked to Teri...she's doing OK. And Kristen is doing GREAT!
Hi Claud,
It's not all its brought up to be...but I'm only 3 days out...and still in a great deal of pain. I can't seem to get comfortable in bed, I might have to go sleep in our recliner for a few nights...
I thank you for all your kind words...It was really tough, I've never had so much pain, where it hurt to try and take a deep breath. That was what bothered me most. But it seems to be getting a little better.

Well, I cant stand protein shakes either, and unlike most people I can't take anything that tastes like it has artificial sweetener in it. I've never been a diet soda or diet anything type of person, so it's been very hard. But I found that Nectar protein drinks are really wonderful. They taste kinda like kool-aid, I'm partial to the Lemon Tea one, it really tastes just like iced tea, and it doesn't have a nasty aftertaste. I drink two a day and that gives me 46 g of protein. I know it's hard, but keep at it, you can do it!

Audrey - can you email me some links for the research you've done about absorbing only 30g of protein in a meal? I've heard this bandied about the main board but I'd like to see the supporting documentation/science. Thanks! [email protected]

its great to be home. I just said to my 15 yr old...tell mom it will be worth it....Its tough...the gas pains suck...the dumping sucks...you have to figure out what is ok for you to eat...I tried crystal lite...sf and it made me dump...I guess i'm stuck with ice water, protein shakes and just soups...I'm on full liquid, but i can't seem to tolerate it yet...I guess everyone is diffferent. I'm not hungry at all. Prepare your self...that's all i can tell you...Make sure you opt to get a private room...the rooms suck at rih...they are all different patience, not all gastric bypass...
You wanna know anythin...just ask..

I am trying to search the web regarding info on protein absorption, I found two links so far that state that the 30-35 gram absorption claim is not accurate:
-Q. How much protein can we absorb at one time?
http://nutrition.about.com/od/askyournutritionist/f/absorption.htm
-Myth #2: You can only assimilate 30 grams of protein at one sitting.
http://www.hypertrophy-specific.com/hsn_artcls_proteinmyths.html
Everything else I come across is claims made by regular folks on bulletin boards. One of these is from a company selling something [the 2nd link], so I tend to have some doubt, but I can't really find any evidence that supports the claim. I'm still looking. HTH. xosm
1. What is your favorite protein source post-op? Chicken Salad, I hate protein drinks... I've tried everyone and they are all awful. I don't drink them anymore I just eat lots of tuna and Chicken and drink lots of water.
2. What was your "last meal" pre-op? Mexican because I knew I wasn't going to eat much of it ever again.
3. On a scale of 1-10 (10= HARD), how is it to deal with "head hunger" post op? 12. But like Rebecca said it got way better... now it's about a 3 when I'm really hungry and non existent throughout the day.
4. What do you dump on? I haven't dumped (knock on wood). I have thrown up a few times because I eat too fast or eat one last bite too many.
5. If your tastes have changed post-op, how have they changed? My tastes ahve changed a lot. I no longer want the pasta, rice, carbs I used to only eat. I still want food but I want difference things. I do miss pasta some but I eat chicken with tomatoes sauce and that satisfies me. I eat a lot of stuff on reduced calorie Wheat thins.
6. If you crave sweets post-op, how do you satiate that craving? Sugar free cookies.... and I have also tried mini peanut butter cups one at a time. Also Peanut butter balls... all yummy and once you have one you don't want another for along time. Sugar isn't a enemy totally. Everyone says SUGAR IS BAD but I don't think it's HORRIBLE in very small quantities. I use a very small amount to keep me regular. Not enough to dump but enough to move things along
7. What kind of pre-op diet did you have to do? (2 weeks liquid, 1 week liquid, no pre-op diet, etc) I had 3 days of liquids and two days of phoso-soda... OMG YUCKIE!
8. How do you handle eating out in restaurants? (What do you order?) I share with my son, get the children's portion, don't order at all and bit off others or get a big TO-GO box.
9. Has your spouses/ significant others eating habits changed since your surgery and if so, how? David had lost 10 pounds. He's on his own for dinner most nights because I eat crackers and cheese or something very small. We don't eat out every night anymore so we are both eating healthier.
10. How do you take your vitamins: chewed, swallowed whole, or crushed in food? (Post-op question) I take Wal-Marts Gummy Children's Vitamins.
