OMG ! ! ! I'm APPROVED !!!!
Holy crap, Holy crap, Holy crap!!!!
I feel like shouting from the top of the Newport Bridge so that everyone can hear me.
I feel like it has taken so long to get here. My journey began November of 2002. yes, 2002! And here we are, into 2006.. I started with United Healthcare and was automatically denied. I had to wait until my company allowed us to switch healthcare providers, and then I changed my permanent address from one in RI to one in MA, so I would qualify for the Harvard Pilgrim plan - and I was approved.
Then.. I got a job offer to work 10 minutes away from my house, instead of the 2 hours I was commuting each way. I couldn't pass it up. I asked about insurance - was told they had United, so I called United and asked if the surgery was covered - they said it was covered under the plan - so I took the job.
I had to wait 6 more months until I was allowed to take 8 weeks off [i have to have this surgery done open, not lap, and it's not going to just be the bypass - i'm doing 3 procedures in one] .. by this time, my original surgeron had left his practice at the Lahey Clinic, and I had moved from Providence to NEwport.
I decided I didn't want to travel all the way to Burlington MA, for this surgery. I contacted Dr. Roye's office and was given a consult date of 5/11/04. I was outright denied by my insurance company because of a "written exclusion policy". I was devastated. I had switched my whole life around because of this job and based it on the fact that they told me the surgery WAS covered.
I fought United tooth and nail until December of 2005. I went through 3 appeals, 2 with United and 1 with the State Dept. of Health. I then took United to court - and lost. I was pretty much ready to give up, when I realized that United HAD to pay for my other two procedures, with the hospital stay. This left Dr. Roye's physican fee - which is about 7K.
I decided to shell out the money and pay for this surgery myself. Well, come January - I got fired. They claim it was becuase I misreported a vacation day, and got paid for it, when I shouldn't have. Total and utter bull**** I beleive, with every fiber of my being, that I was fired because I was put in charge of a major project at work - when they thought I wasn't going to have surgery. I told my boss that I was paying for the surgery, and that unfortunately I'd be out of work for 2 months during the project.
Three weeks later, I was fired for some bull**** reason.
Anyway.. so I started paying for COBRA - 500 bucks a month. And then I get this letter in the mail stating that my former employer is switching from United to BCBS as of 3/1.
It is 3/10, and I have finally been approved. This jouney has worn me to the bone.. but I made it. I won. I don't care if it's by default or what.. I don't care.
I'm having this surgery, it's paid for- and I don't have to worry about "what if's"... it's taken care of.
thank you fairy godmother lol
my birthday was yesterday, and i was feeling like crap.. this made everything so soooooo much better.
hi teri
thank you, thank you!!
i saw Dr. Roye on 1/17, and he gave me a date of 5/23, but that was because my sleep study hadn't happened yet.. so i think if you see him around this time, your date will be sometime around then? may/june, i'd imagine.
i wouldn't totally take my dates as "normal" procedure for him.. i'm kind of doing things a little differently than most. :o( lol
