Question
Well, I may make some people unhappy with my response to this, but I am going to be honest. I drink diet soda and coffee. But I will say that I am almost 2 years post op and as close to my goal as I can get (I am at 145, would like to be 135, but have A LOT of excess skin on tummy and thighs). Also, I did not drink coffee or any caffeine drinks for the first year after my surgery. I did not have any diet soda until about 6 months ago. But now I have coffee a few times a week and a diet soda with my lunch at work daily.
I strongly recommend that if you are going to have the surgery you go into it knowing that there are things you should give up to maximize your weight loss and health. I was never told by my surgeon not to have coffee or diet soda, that was something I chose to do to since I read so much about it on here. I did try a few sips of soda a few months after surgery and it made me gassy and feel uncomfortably full. Now I don't have that problem. When you are newly post-op so many foods don't agree with you and you are trying to get all your protein and liquids in. When you drink caffeine drinks you need to double your liquid intake because these have the opposite effect on you. For me now, none of that is a problem. But in the beginning it would have been.
I have maintained my weight for over 6 months now and feel great about my success so I feel I am capable of making choices like having diet soda or coffee. But I went into the surgery thinking I would never have it again. And I was a die hard Code Red Mountain Dew drinker (I haven't had any mountain dew at all in 2 years!!). Diet soda doesn't seem to affect me at all gas wise and the stretching your pouch from the bubbles is supposely a myth according to some doctors and then the truth according to others. All doctors have their own beliefs, follow what yours tells you.
Good luck to you on your quest. I hope you find the success we all strive for!
