This past weekend was the RI Dietetic Association's 5K Fitness Run/Walk. Amazingly, hundreds of people came out to Goddard Park in Warwick, in the cold downpouring rain to participate in this event. There weren't as many of us as I had hoped, but the "Roye's Runners" team was definitely present. While I am incredibly proud of all of us, I am most proud of the two women who came in last. They are both seven months post-op and have each lost more than 100 lbs. Neither of them walks long distances, they choose to get their exercise in other ways. They both showed-up, layered with clothing and ambition, ready to walk. While others passed them from the start, they were not at all concerned with coming in last. Along the 5K course, they kept a good pace and talked almost every minute. They discussed sagging skin, new discoveries in their lives and how happy they are now. It was a time for motivating each other and for bonding. The walking became secondary. When they crossed the finish line, amid cheers from the volunteers, they had completed the 5K in under an hour. They were soaked to the bone, freezing cold but they had done it! Not only had they completed the walk, but they were not out of breath, they weren't about to collapse and at no time did either of them think they were going to have a heart attack. Coming in last didn't matter - they had made it to the end. They agreed that last year, pre-surgery, they most likely wouldn' have been there at all. Or if they had tried, they might have made it 250 feet and been ready to sit down. These two women are my buddy Gloria and myself. But it doesn't matter who we are, what matters is that because of this surgery, we've all been given an opportunity to change our lives. Each morning when you wake up, think about what new thing you're going to do today to make a difference in your own life. You'll be glad you did! Jen

Jen, Good for you both...you must be extremely proud and feel very good about the choices you made to get you here. I commend you both and hopefully I will be able to join you all in Royes group next year. My date is fast approaching and I have had so many crazy feelings these past few weeks since finding out my surgery date for April 26th.....WOW. Keep up the fantastic work and remember, this is YOUR life and your living it the way you want to!

Thanks Dee - we were quite proud of ourselves! Kerry - we found out about the walk through Susan Manchester, the nutritionist at RIH. SHe comes to all of the support group meetings and lets us know about events like this. If more things come up, I'll let you know. Jen
