Disappointing news

Well I finally went for my surgery date appointment and found that everything was great except for my thyroid levels! My levels were at 27.68 and Dr. Roye won't perform the surgery until they are below 10.00. He explained that problems can occure with anestesia if the levels are above normal, so yes....dissapointing it was but I was assured by him that I should be able to get my levels normal within 4-6 weeks. I wanted him to schedule the surgery date then, but he told me after my PCP contacted him with the results of 10.00 or under, then he would schedule the date for surgery. Good news is he allowed me to sign all of the paperwork and I got my file folder so I wouldnt have to return when my levels get normal, and my PCP said that it should only be 4 weeks with my new dosage he prescribed to get me moving along! So....Ive got to wait, but again....Dr Roye is always very certain that everything is perfect prior to the surgery and for that, I am very relieved to have such a wonderful Dr.

Hi Dee, It sounds like Dr. Roye is crossing all of his T's and dotting his I's with you and that's great! I know it's frustrating for you to have to wait though. It will happen in due time. Are you on medication to lower your levels? Were you on meds before? I have thyroid problems too. I do know that your levels change quite often so it shouldn't be a problem getting it lowered. Take care.... Megan B

Hi Megan, I agree actually...he is, and after initially being very dissapointed I am grateful for having him be so thorough with me and making sure everything is perfect for surgery. I am on 200 mcg's of Levoxyl everyday but I have to honest, I wasn't faithful to taking them...so it is my own fault. Are you post op and do you still have thyroid problems? I'm hoping to lower my levels in 4-5 weeks so we can move forward and get a surgery date perhaps in March or early April. I am also walking on my treadmill a mile a day and watching what I eat until the surgery. Dr. Roye wants to do lap on me, but wants me to be 20 lbs. under what I am currently. I DONT WANT THE OPEN so I am going to hopefully be able to drop it. Thank you for your kind words and support!

Hi Dee, Yes, I am post op. I had my surgery on Nov. 2nd, 2004. Before surgery, I was on meds for my thyroid, cholesteral, diabetes, anxiety and birth control because I didn't menstrate due to my obesity. The day after surgery, my doctor took me off of all meds except my thyroid medication and the anti-anxiety. The reason why I stayed on the thyroid meds is because my doctors didn't want my hormone levels to get all out of wack and it would be harder for me to lose weight. Take your meds! They will help you lose weight! I know that when you have problems with your thyroid, it's almost impossible to lose weight. I've lost 54 pounds so far and I take a Pilates class 3 times a week. I feel awesome. I still need to lose about 70 pounds but I'm getting closer! I wish you luck. If you have any more questions about surgery, please ask! Megan B

Hi Megan, Thats awesome news, congrats to you and your weight loss! I don't have any blood pressure, high cholesteral, diabetes or any other weight related issues because of me being a vegetarian for 14 years, thankfully. I just recently started adding fish and chicken into my diet. The only meds I am on are the thyroid. Did you have sleep apnea? I have severe sleep apnea, which blew me away because I am never tired and told I sleep like a rock once asleep. I hate the CPAP and although I have it, I haven't used it anymore then 3 or 4 times....its keeping me up all night and I was sleeping better and more sound when I didnt have it! My cats hate it!! As far as exercising right now, I LOVE my treadmill, but look forward to joining a gym after surgery to tone up! Whatever Dr. Roye says to do, I will...he is an AWESOME Dr. and I trust him. Thank you again for your reply!
