On the Road...
I have a question for all you post-ops. What/where do you eat when you are out & about? I am still having a great deal of problems w/ food & drinking as well. I keep trying new foods, retrying ones that make me, well, barf. ( I'm getting used to the "bucket") Please offer me your suggestions. My husband & I have always enjoyed eating out & I really miss the ability to do this together... Thanks friends... Marianne
Hi Marianne,
I too have always enjoyed grabbing a bite on the road and not having to worry about planning ahead. We have begun going out to dinner again, and I am finding that to order off the menu is not such a big deal, once you do it the first time (lol). When we go out, I tend to stick with what I know will be "safe," (you know, something that won't be coming up) like a baked potato, or mashed potato and a glass of milk. If you can tolerate chicken, there are plenty of places that have small portions of chicken, or decent choices off the children's menu. If you are afraid of eating too much, most places will be happy to accommodate you by bringing only 1/2 an order, and wrap the rest. When we have gone out to breakfast, I have be perfectly happy with a single pancake, eat half, and a glass of milk (eggs don't agree with me yet).
Don't be afraid to ask for what you need. Hope that helps!
Kristen
It depends on where you are in your food stages. If you are able to eat solid food you can try just about anything. Most places have a low carb menu and I order off that. I always have enough for 2 more meals so a bonus for me ;).
I think food wise it will just be a lot of hit or miss while you try and find what works for you and what doesn't. I know that I can't get anything greasy so I avoid trips to fast food places and small diners that seem to have greasy foods. Greasy foods make me feel crappy so I stay away from them. I eat out a few times a month and enjoy meals from Applebee's, Chelo's, Uno's, Ruby Tuesdays and TGI Fridays so I still feel very "normal" when out with the hubby and friends.
One big thing for me is to not order crazy. In the past before surgery I would always get a salad, munch on the bread before the meal came and then eat all my main course. Now I stick with only the main meal and I always know I'll have left overs.
Sorry this isn't really enlightening. But you will find stuff you enjoy down the road. I know for me the first couple of months were very miserable eating out wise because nothing seemed to agree with me, but once I hit the 3 month mark it got better.
Good luck with it!!
