Hi everyone, I want to get the gastric bypass surgery but my regular doctor will not give me a referral to see a surgeon about it, he says I need to try other options first but I have tried different diets and they never last. I am 5'2 and weigh 206 I think my BMI is 36, or 38. Which I know isn't healthy. Should I go to a surgeon to see if he'll let me have it done anyways? If you have any ideas write to me at [email protected]

The surgeon will want a referral I don't think they will consider it without one At least mine did (Dr. Pohl) I had 2 of them b/c of many medical problems & i was 220lbs & 5'1'' I suppose u could call whatever surgeon your interested in & ask the office people & see what they say.... GOOD LUCK

With Dr. Roye you don't need a referral to him unless your insurance requires it. (Mine didn't, Healthmate). If you have a lot of co-morbidies or at least one or two serious ones, surgeons and insurance companies will mkae exceptions to the BMI of 40 guideline. If you don't have co-morbs I doubt they would approve the surgery. Good luck! Megan P.S. It takes a long time to get into see Dr. Roye for an initial appointment. So if you decide to try to set up an appointment, expect to wait at least 6 months, probably more.

I made my appointment with Dr. Roye directly...no other doctors were involved. I have Blue Cross - but who says a PCP is informed enough to deciede this for you? He should give you the referral...it's their personal prejudice against the surgery I think.
