Hi Lisa, Mr. Messa was thirty minutes into the surgery when he died. We didn't know that he lost three other patients form WLS either. No she was never in maxi-ward but should have been!!!! I guess you were one of the fortunate ones to have a clean room. I have been reading some of the replys from the RI site regarding what they thought of the hospital . Take a look!!! Mary

I work with someone who had open WLS with Dr Pohl and hes doing GREAT and also work with one of Mr Messa's relatives and from what I understand Mr Messa hadn't been opened at the time of his death. He was under anesthesia only. Unfortunately death is a risk ANYONE takes when they have surgery, not just weight loss surgery. As far as the lap band procedure, Dr Pohl CLEARLY talked about the increased risks of lap band surgery at his seminar and how many hes done and how he felt the risks were higher than reg wls. Im sorry your daughter had a bad experience with the band. I wouldnt have lap band surgery myself. Im going to have lap rny. Just my thoughts....

I beleive that this doctor has not done enough lap band surgeries to suit me!! I read that when a doctor does over one hundred then he is more skilled than when he has only done about forty. Personally I wouldn't go into surgery unless I really had to, not after what my daughter went through. Something bad happened with this surgery and unfortunatly my daughter had to be the one this happened to. She said she wouldn't ever do it again not for a million dollars. Not worth her life. Have you also checked with this doctor to see how many other patients of his have died from WLS and how???

I agree he hasnt done enough lap band surgeries also but the only way to do enough is to keep doing them! I also think that the overall risks are higher for the band as you can get infections easier with them, besides other factors. Now with regular weightloss surgery hes done probably 400 by now and I feel very confident with him being my surgeon doing a laproscopic rny. I hope your daughter feels better soon.

THANK YOU, I CHECKED ON THIS SITE TO SEE HOW MANY SURGERIES HE HAS DONE AND I DON'T BELEIVE HE HAS DONE TOO MANY GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERIES BUT NEVER THE LESS HE NEEDS TO DO MORE LAPBAND SURGERIES , I BELEIVE HE HAS ONLY DONE ABOUT 50. SOMETIMES THE DOCTOR IS AT FAULT OR THE HOSPITAL ITSELF FOR MISTAKES MADE. CAN YOU BELEIVE MY DAUGHTER WAS SERVED FOOD THE DAY OF HER SURGERY??

He has lost 1 patient in his career and he is very open about this at his orientation meeting that is mandatory before you are even considered for surgery. Mr. Messa died from complications with anesthesia.

Exactly, he died from the complications of anesthesia. And at Dr Pohl's April 8th seminar he said he'd done around 375 gastric bypass surgeries and around 35 lap band surgeries. I trust Dr Pohl completely.

Hi Sheila, Roger Williams is an old hospital, but the staff was excellent. I was on the maxi-care ward for all 4 nights. The only complaint I had was the staff was very loud at night when I was trying to sleep. And you can't shut your door...but besides that they were great!! Best of luck to you! Lisa
