HIDA test
Hi everybody! I was just wondering if anybody out there can tell me what a HIDA test is. I have my first consult date on December 4th and I'm trying to get all my tests done before that. I had my gallbladder out a couple of years ago so I don't have to deal with that! I already saw the dietician, having psych. evaluation Nov. 10th. Does doctor Pohl make everybody have a sleep apnea test and cardio test? I don't think I need either...anyway I'm rambling...my real question is what is a HIDA test? I heard you have to lay flat for 1 1/2 hours, that wouldn't be good! Thanks for listening! Lisa Brogan, Attleboro MA.
Lisa, these are tests everyone has to have. Although if you had your gallbadder removed I don't think you will need the HIDA scan. Think of things this way, even though you don't think you need those other tests, do them. Better to be safe than sorry. Make sure you are healthy before the surgery. As far as the sleep apnea test, most people don't realize they have it. It could be a dangerous factor if left untreated before the surgery. Better to have the test, don't you think? Cardio...they have to make sure your heart and breathing is ok before surgery. How I see it, let them do all the tests they want on me. The more they know, the better my chances. I read too many stories about how people didn't have certain tests and the results from the surgery were not good. Don't risk the most valuable thing you have, your life, just because something might be an inconvience.
Good luck on everything. My appointment with Dr. Pohl is on Nov. 20 so I am doing the same tests you are. Except I need the gallbladder tests. My gallbladder is healthy but I am having the doc remove it anyhow because 50% of patients will develop stones. I don't want a second surgery to remove it.
Let us know how things are going. And thanks for using the messageboard.

Hi Lisa-
Dr. Pohl did my surgery on 07/01, and I did not have to have a HIDA scan because I did not have my gallbladder. I also did not have to have the Sleep Apnea test, I had no signs of sleep apnea and I was somewhat of a lightweight. I thinks he makes everyone have the cardio consult, and then the cardio dr. will determine if you need to have the stress test or not.
Dr. Pohl was great! I was released from the hospital on 7/03 and felt really good, no complaints. Just about 4 months out and have lost about 70 lbs.
Good Luck!
