To alcohol or not to alcohol...

The question is...   I'm ready to drink some alcohol or am I?

I know after RNY you can't drink much alcohol (i hear a couple of sips and your pretty much done), but how long do you have to wait to have any alcohol?  With the 4th of July coming up, I'd like to know if its ok to have a couple of sips or not.   Any ideas oh wise OH'ers?

I do not know... but go to the wl in your 20's forum - a lot of those kids drink early out! You can probably ask them how it has affected them!

Thanks Johanna!  I did just that, and you are so right,  I got an answer!   I searched the 20's message board and there was a question just like mine.  Several people answered.  The main answer seems to be... most doctors will say not to or only on special occasions.  The experienced people say to stay away from high sugar drinks, but a glass of wine or drink is ok.   Also the biggest concern is ADDICTION TRANSFER.   They are very concerned about that. So i think I may just have to try something this weekend.   Thanks again!  Great idea !   Eldy

Eldy,

I saw Heather (my NUT) last week and she said the doctors don't want you to but if you want to celebrate a holiday or special occasion, try the alcohol at home first. This way you'll know how it affects you and you won't over do it and not be able to enjoy the rest of your celebration.

I hope that helps.
Good Luck and enjoy your 4th!

Hi Eldy,

This would be the only time that you should eat and drink at the same time.  If you don't have something in your stomach the alcohol will hit you like a ton of bricks.  I have probably had 3-4 drinks post-op, I have never really been a drinker.  Have fun! Enjoy the 4th!

Hi Emilie!

I guess the same rules apply that way.  I never drank on an empty stomach before surgery.  I'm not much of a drinker myself.  Before surgery, I did more talking about drinking than actually drinking.  So really there is no real feeling of loss.  If I don't end up drinking Friday night, its not like I really missed out on anything.  But just in case I want to, I wanted to make sure whats what first.  Thanks for your input!   I will be at my friends house on Oakland Beach Friday night.  Her birthday and 4th celebration.   Have a great Holiday, Emilie!      Eldy

I have had a couple drinks in the last year since my surgery.  I  can't drink a lot.  As Chip put it I am a easy drunk now. lol...   I would try your 1st drink at home to see how it would effect you.  this way if you act silly it is in your own home or if you get sick on that one drink it is in your own home.  I know New Years Eve  I had 1 drink and wow I turn into a funny drunk.  I was happy and loving everyone I saw.  Now I can drink now and then and I am fine from it.  Just stay away from the stuff that is high in sugar.  That I find make me sick fast.
