Hi all-
1st - when do Dr. Pohl's patients start on pureed food? Is it 2 weeks after surgery? I know he told me, but for the life of me I cannot remember  (Dr. P. did you remove a few brain cells too?)
2nd - I hate sweets. I hate chocolate. My size came from huge portions of salty, savory foods. I have to force myself to drink the shakes.  Everyone that I have tried taste like over-ripe bananas. Does anyone know of a shake that is NOT sweet? I have made some homemade chicken broth and that is good but I really need the convience of a shake when I return to work.
Thanks!

Patti, my dr. said two weeks after surgery, but I want some food. A tablespoon of scrambled egg, or grounded tuna fish will suit me just fine.  This opisourse is not hitting on much. I don't think I am really hungry, but I just need a fix of a little bit of food. As of this am, I have lost 21 lbs. That is the two weeks before surgery and now 5 days since.  I feel good, except just sore and still a little bloated.

See ya!

Patti- Unjury has a chicken broth. It has 20g protein per serving with 8oz water. It's not homemeade but it doesn't taste like over-ripe bananas. Hope this helps!!!~~~~~~~~Kim

Thanks Kim, I'll check it out. 20 g is great and I won't have time to make homemade once I go back to work.

you should look into unflavored protein - they still have some taste to them but they have no sweeteners and flavorings added - nectar makes one (nectar medical) Nectar is my FAVORITE brand because their protein is not thick and it mixes up easily.  You can add this to your soups (make a slurry with cool broth or water first so it does not clump)  I am also going to buy Optimum Nutrition Any Whey - it is designed to be used for cooking... I will let you know how it is when I buy it!

Thanks, I am going to look into your suggestions! Let me know about the Optimum Any Whey. I like the idea of the Nectar not being thick. I just like it to have a liquid consistancy and not like drinking pudding.

I will!!  I love sweets but hate shakes!!  I think they are overly sweet.  I add twice as much liquid to my shakes than called for.  If you like kool-aid type drinks nectar also has fruit punch flavored shakes.  I buy the twisted cherry, mix one scoop with 10 oz of water and then add 10 oz of sugar free kool-aid, either cherry or punch, or 10 oz of cyrstal light rasberry ice (my favorite)  My husband and little kids will drink this!!  You should look into these - makes it way easier to get in protein!

That sounds like something I WOULD like. I always drank water all day long before and frequently would put Crystal Light into it (and my fav is the rasberry ice too!) The combination of the twisted cherry sound great. And NOT so sickly thick like the shakes. And I will be getting my protein finally. Win-win! I cannot thank you enough for your imput and can't wait to get some Nectar and try it.
I bow down to you oh generous sage of gastric bypass culinary !

Here is the email from  the rep to get cheap samples:

At the request of literally thousands of pre-op and post op bariatric patients, support groups, Dieticians and Physicians, we have made some changes to our sample program for 2009. We had been offering ½ serving size samples of 3 flavors of our protein products and many individuals were asking how they could sample more flavors. With that in mind, we have introduced our new “variety sample pack." We are now making available “full serving" size packets of ALL 11 flavors of our Nectar™ protein! The normal retail price for all eleven full serving packets is $21.89 plus $5.00 shipping. We are offering a one time coupon for $16.90 off the retail price, that will bring your price down to only $4.99 plus $5.00 shipping, for a total of $9.99! This gives people the people the ability, for the first time ever, to sample all 11 flavors at one time, for less than $1.00 per serving. This will now be our sample program, so if you would like to take advantage of this new program, simply call us at the number listed below. We will also be making this new program available online when we introduce our new website sometime in the next 30 days.
