I was wondering if anyone has United Health Care (State of RI).  If so, can you tell me how long it took you to get insurance approval and if there were any other requirements to do.  I have my first appointment with Dr. Sax next week.

I had UHC last year through a state agency, and was NOT covered for lapband.  PLEASE, avoid some misery -- don't call UHC and ask if you are covered (I got the wrong answer).  Get a copy of the "plan document" (from wherever your HR admin is), and read the section about "exclusions".  My plan had an exclusion for all weigh loss surgery.

hi there!  I have UHC through a state agency and was approved for both lapband and RNY.  I had started out wanting the lapband ( and was approved ) and then changed my mind for RNY.  They had to resubmit the information to get approval again.  And it passed.  I think it has alot to do with what the information is that is sent to them also.  You have to  meet certain requirements to get approved.  Dr. Sax's office should let you know if you are approved.  Good luck!   Eldy

I also have United Health under the State of RI. This is what I am most worried about. I called UHC before I started this process and she said they handle approvals case by case. I will not know until I finish my last test on the 25th and go back to Dr. Giovanni. Dr. G's office told me to make sure my PCP is as descriptive as possible in his doctors note.
