My surgery got postponed!
I am so disappointed! I was originally scheduled for 11:30 am and told to arrive at 10:00 am. I received a call from RWH yesterday telling me they changed my time to 1:00 pm and to arrive at 11:30 am. I arrived at 11:30. They processed my admission and prepped me with and IV and a Heparin shot. Then I waited and waited and waited and waited and waited! Finally Dr. Pohl came in and said he had an emergency surgery and would have to postpone mine. He said he wouldn't have anything available for at least 3 weeks. I started to freak out and explained to him that my husband already took his vacation time for this and would not be able to get any more time off. (Not just for me, but he needs to stay home with my 4 kids). He then agreed to put me on the schedule first thing this Friday morning. I am so nervous that something will happen and I won't have surgery at that time. It's bad enough that I already did the liquids yesterday and I couldn't drink anything after midnight. I ended up going from midnight to 2:30 pm today before I could have some water. But the mental preparation I went through was draining. So I'm scheduled for this Friday at 7:30 am. Let's hope everything goes as planned this time.
Wow Marcia, that really stinks! I mean you had the IV and the Heparin shot and all. I would have been totally upset too. I don't blame you. Good thing he said he will do it Friday. Well, Friday will be here and you will get the surgery done and over with. Look on the bright side... you have one heck of a story to tell! Keep your resolve and you will get thru this. Just a set back. There is a reason for everything that happens. I think I have pretty much hit all the cliche's I can. I just want to bring up your spirits and know that it will be all good. Take care and keep your chin up ( oops thats one more)! Eldy
I have a cliche too, at least I think it's a cliche. Everything happens for a reason. Last Wednesday my four year old was diagnosed with Strep. On Monday, my one year old got a cold. I woke up yesterday feeling the onset of a cold. I loaded up all day on fluids, Airborne and Zicam. I still felt lousy when I went in for surgery today. I didn't say anything to them because I was afraid they would cancel. This gives me two more days to rest up and fight off this virus. As disappointed as I am, I know it's probably best not to go into surgery with a bug. The other bummer is that tomorrow I have to do strictly liquids again! Thanks for your well wishes, Marcia
Marcia,
Keep you chin up. I don't know how I would have reacted in your situation. It would really have thrown me for a loop too. Bottom line though is that you are going on Friday and thats whats important. A flase start always sucks especially when the mental and physical preparation is so intense. But at least someone who was in dire straits got what they needed thats something.

Thanks Mike,
You're right. The person that needed the emergency surgery had a hole in their stomach. It was tough mentally though. It took a lot mentally to get to surgery time today and then just minutes away it was cancelled. My doctor had also been called in at 12:30 am the night before for an emergency. So he had been working all through the night and then all day today. Laproscopic surgery is so precise, as is any surgery, and I guess it was better that I didn't have an exhausted surgeon. I think reflexes are slower and more mistakes occur when you're tired. One little mistake could have become something serious. I'm first on the schedule Friday morning so hopefully nothing will delay my surgery. Thanks for your kind words, Marcia
