Does everyone go home with a drain?

I'm having RnY tomorrow (Dr. Pohl, hello fellow patients of his!).  I've read that some people have drains for a while when they go home.   He never mentioned anything about that to me.  Does everyone have one when they leave the hospital or is it different for each person? Thanks, Marcia

I had Dr. Giovanni, same office as Dr. Pohl, and I never had a drain.  I don't know why some do and some don't.  But its only temporary anyway.  So no need to fret!   Take care!   Eldy

Has anyone answered this yet?? I wondered the same thing. I figured maybe it's a drain to keep from getting an infection in the portion of the stomach. I am clueless on this.

The drain is to decrease fluid build up in the surgical area.I came home with a drain and it was removed yesterday...yay!!! It doesn't hurt it just gets in the way and is a bit unsightly. I've also had drains post breast surgery so they are used in different types of surgery. Good luck tomorrow, you'll be in my thoughts for an uneventful surgery and recovery!~~~~~~~~~~Kim

Well, there's a drain and then there's a g-tube.  I had the drain, thin tube ending in like little plastic balloon that collects the fluid, removed the morning after surgery.  I came home with the g-tube and that stays in 5 weeks.  The g-tube released pressure in the old stomach, so it doesn't stress the sutures, plus is there in case you can't eat at all for some reason and you can be fed thru it if necessary.  You have to flu**** twice a day, which is weird at first, but then you get used to it.  Not all surgeons keep those in though.  Either or both, all worth it in the end.  Good luck :o)
