DR. POHL patients............

Hello fellow Rhode Islanders!
I completed all my tests required and just got approved for RnY.   Dr. Pohl was given my chart to review and I am scheduled for Friday, 5/8 to meet with him.  If any of you are patients of his can you tell me, will I get my surgery date that day?  Will he send me for pre-op testing then?  How long did you have to wait for a surgery date once you went to this follow-up appt.?  It took me a long time to get to this point and I am so excited to start this journey.   Also, how much weight did you lose on the 2-week pre-op diet that he requires?  Thanks so much, Marcia

Hi Marcia,

Welcome to the RI Forum and the WLS journey!

I have Dr. Pohl too. He is the most wonderful surgeon for me!

If the appt on 5/8 is your second appt and you've had your endoscopy, you will receive your surgery date within a week or so. Possibly even on that day.

If this is your first appt with him and you have NOT had your endoscopy, you will be scheduled for that then return for a second appt with him.

At the time your surgery appt is scheduled, you will have your date to start your pre-op diet and you will be sent for your pre-op blood work.

I lost about 17 lbs from the pre-op diet. But this varies person-to-person.

From my second appt to my surgery date was about 4 weeks or so.

He highly recommends that you regularly attend support groups in the area while waiting for your surgery date AND post-op.

If you would like a list of them sent to you, please email me at the address below!

Again, Congrats!

Jules,

Thanks for such a warm welcome.  I actually did email you a couple of weeks ago and you sent me the support group list (Thanks!).  I would really like to get to one this month, but every time I try to make one, something comes up with one of my kids (I have 4).  I know I just have to put my foot down and take this time for myself.

Yes, I did have all the testing done; endoscopy, gallbladder ultrasound, psych. eval., cardiac eval., several Nut. visits, and sleep study.  They told me the only thing left was this appt. and pre-op work.  What do they do at the pre-op appt. and how long does it take?  I'm so excited to go to this appt. I can barely wait.

I will try my best to make a SG soon and hopefully we can meet!  Marcia

 Hello and Welcome

I had Dr. Pohl and this Fri 5/8  is my husband Surgery with Dr. Pohl.   He is a great doctor.   Your in great hands with him.   There is pre-op testing but they get you set up fast as long as the insurance is approved.  From what you wrote it is so your in good shape.  Everyone is differant on how long they waited for the surgery date.

I myself let me start with  I started my jouney in Dec of 2007 when I 1st met Dr Pohl with my husband.  We both where set up to go for the scope down the thoat into the stomach.  I went 1st.  I went back after I had been cleared from my pcp and all the other stuff you have to have done to get that last apt with Dr. Pohl.  That does not take long.  I had everything done by Feb of 2009. Went in to see the Doctor and they call me that week with my Surgery date April 22, 2008  I have lost 185lbs as of today.  I started out at 345lbs and now I am at 160lbs WHAT A GREAT JOURNEY.

My husband had to put off his surgery for a while do to I had to have another surgery in Sept of 2008 I broke my hip and had to have it replaced.  All is much better now Surgery was a success. He has lost some weight since because I have to eat differant now.  He was 315 the 1st time we went to see Dr. Pohl and when he went back in the begining of April of this year he was down to 285lbs.  The doctor was very happy to see this .  He is not having gastric bypass like me but the lap band.  He started his 2 week pro-diet as of April 24th and at that day he was down to 278lbs. He will weight himself again the morning before leaving for surgery.  May 8, 2009.  I myself I lost 23lbs in that pre-op diet days.

I wish you the best of luck and keep us post.  So that we can put aside a spot on our biggest loser bench for you.  Look forward to watching you go though your journey with you.  I is very much LIFE CHANGING.  Best move I ever made.

Hi Lisa,

Congratulations on your incredible weight loss!  You must feel fantastic.

My appt. is this Friday, 5/8.  I hope they give me my surgery date then.  I'm so excited to start this journey (and I'm not exactly a patient person).  Hopefully I won't have to wait too long.

I'm happy to hear that your hip replacement surgery was a success.  I am amazed that you still lost that much weight since you must have been immobile for quite a while.

Best of luck to your husband on Friday.  You must be such a great support for each other for going through this together.

Yes, please save me a spot on your loser's bench.  I can't wait to join you!  Marcia

Hello and congrats!  I had my 2nd appointment with Dr. Pohl on April 13th.  They called me the next day with my lapband surgery date (May 12)  and my preop testing (April 28).  I should have started the preop diet on the same day as testing but have been doing Medifast since February so he told me to just continue on with that.  I can't tell you about losing weight on that diet but I am very proud to have lost 48 pounds to date!!  Good luck and let us know when you get your date.

Hi and congratulations to YOU for losing all that weight before surgery!  Looks like you're in a great frame of mind and be very successful with this surgery.  Is Medifast an all liquid diet or do you combine it with meals?  I dread the pre-op diet but realize it is an important to prepare for surgery.  I will definitely let you all know when I get my date because I will be shouting from the rooftops!  Marcia

Congrats, Marcia!

I'm new here and just starting this journey so I can't help with your questions but I think the other 'losers'  have given you some great info.

I wish you the best luck and hope you have a great recovery!
