I just wanted to let you guys know that I finally told my husband I have been looking into surgery.   For some reason I just could not spit the words out.  We were in the car coming home from Best Buy and I just blurted it all out.  He was really surprised but totally supportive.  He has a ton of questions as do I so hopefully once I get the ball rolling we can go to one of the support groups.  A friend highly recommended Dr.Ryder to me.  I called her office and they are supposed to be sending me a packet to fill out before I can get a appointment.  I figure hey I've taken the first step right  :)  Hope y'all had a great day!

That is great!  When I told my husband (a person who is naturally fit and healthy) I was half crying.  Part of it was out of embarassment for myself, admitting outloud that I am morbidly obese was hard, part was because I did not know how he would feel. He was supportive, but I think on the inside he was not too thrilled with the idea.  Once we went to the seminar together, he was able to meet my surgeon and hear from him the risks and the possible results.

He did not know I wanted RNY (opposed to the band) and was surprised when I told the surgeon that was the surgery I wanted.  When he heard the pros and cons of each, from the surgeons mouth, he was more supportive of my choice.  The seminar really helped him fully understand the surgery and now he is onboard about 80%.  I think he is still afraid of something bad happening  to me during surgery or of the complications that may happen afterward.  I would feel the same way if I were in his shoes though.

Good luck to you!

Johanna

Same things here ladies! I was nervous as well to tell my "waist 32 pants size since we got married" husband. Aside from all the obvious reasons, I was afraid I would get "oh here we go again with another crazy scheme to lose weight". However, we've talked a lot about it and I've shown him a lot of the information and with me, it helps to have a close friend who has done it as well, so all these things helped him to understand. He, like the others, is most concerned about what could go wrong, and says he wishes there was another way, but otherwise he is supportive of my decision.

I don't know if anyone who doesn't struggle with their weight can ever truly understand the "need" to take the WLS route, so for me I am happy with him supporting me and trusting in my decision that this is the right thing for me, rather than agreeing himself that it is. I have you guys for that!

Amy:

I am so happy things went so well with hubby.  His support will be crucial to you.

I've got my post pre-op testing appointment with Dr. Ryder in three weeks -- hope we'll be able to set a surgery date then.  You'll love her -- very down to earth.  I felt so defeated when I walked into her office the first time.  When I left, I felt like the weight of the world had been lifted off my shoulders.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Hi Amy,

What a big relief this must be for you!

The support groups are great too! For, both, you AND hubby! I highly recommend attending as many as the two of you can between now and 'show time'.

I wish you both well. Be happy!

Amy, I felt the same way as you when telling my husband.  I was afraid because he has seen me try so many things (and spent lots of money) and failed at them.  I finally got up the courage to tell him and he too was surprised.  The next day, he had a doctor's appointment and brought the subject up with him and his doctor gave him a name of a surgeon he highly recommended.  Chris came home and handed me the name and number of the surgeon and I started to cry, knowing he truly was on my side.  He has been supportive the whole time.  We are very fortunate. Good luck and I hope everything goes smoothly and quickly for you.  Eldy
