Vitamins.......???

Hey everyone. I am trying to do all my research now for my (hopefully!) upcoming surgery and right now I am looking into Vitamins. I definitely get the message that it is EXTREMELY important to take your vitamins to avoid complications down the line. Initially I thought that I would get the regular over the counter drug store variety, but recently I have been reading that a lot of people recommend getting the vitamins specifically formulated for Bariatric patients like the ones from BariatricAdvantage.com.

Just wondering the regimine that all the post-ops have for vitamins and/or supplements and what you recommend?

Thanks!!!

I still take my Flintsones complete chewables!  I've tried to take other vitamins but I have such a gag relex and most daily vitamins are so large that I have such a hard time with them.  I have found the most difficult thing to find is calcium citrate that I liked that was chewable.  I can now take the caltrate petites and that makes it easier for me... now I just forget to take them 3 different times during the day ~ I'm trying!!

Hey Liza!

Good for you for posting this!

My motto is 'Keep It Simple'.

Therefore, this is my daily routine...

Daily Morning:

1 Chewable Centrum (was 2 Flinstone Complete w/ iron but like this flavor)

1,000 mg Vitamin C

1,000 IU Vitamin D3

400 IU Vitamin E (great for my skin) optional

1 B Complex (CVS brand)

1 sublingual - 1,000 mcg B12 (some recommend only 500 mcg weekly)

TWO hours later I begin getting my recommended calcium in by using UpCal D in my bottled water. First thing in the morning, I prepare three 24 oz. bottles of water. Two with the 500 mg Calcium, UpCal D. At bedtime, I take, chew, yum-yum a bariatric advantage Calcium tablet ( I have chocolate, cherry & mint to choose from). I also carry some with me in case I rushed around the house in the morning and didn't prepare my bottles.

I also carry around Papaya Enzyme (GNC). It has helped me through the 'stuck' moments time and time again! Tastes good too!

So far, no problems at all with my blood tests. And my B12 is perfect too (even though it's recommended to take less).

Our bodies each, on their own even without surgery, absorb vitamins and minerals differently. So, trial and error. Check to see what your surgeon recommends.

Bariatric advantage is a great choice because it's made specifically for bariatric patients. Don't be afraid to try other labels that are less expensive. Just be sure to check the data and the pharmacist to make sure you're able to absorb the contents.

Also, there is a 'recommended products' forum here on OH. It's listed under - Forums - Weightloss Related - Health and Nutrition. Very helpful!

See you soon!

Jules
