Hi everyone,

Just wanted to let everyone know that things are progressing along nicely for me. I have had all of my appointments except for my UGI which is scheduled for tomorrow am. I have done everything else, whi*****luded a mammogram because my mom had breast cancer. I have to go back for a second one on the 31st because it was my first and they have no baseline. I met with the nutritionist and have to see her again in a few weeks. So basically all my pre appointments are finished. I just have to make sure that Dr. Pohl has all my info and I can make my second appointment. I have a few questions, though. Hopefully someone will be able to help me.

1. The nutritionist put me on kind of a diet. I have to write down what I eat and exercise and things like that. How strict are they with that? I know that if I could diet easily I wouldn't be in this situation. Not that I'm not going to try, but I hope they are not too strict.

2. Also, has anyone found it difficult to get all their information from these appointments to the Dr. in a timely manner? Should I be calling these places to make sure that they have sent or faxed over the information? Dr. Pohl says I cannot have my second appointment until they have all the information at the office. Just curious if the other drs are good about getting the stuff where it needs to be or if I should be calling them.

3. I know that a couple of weeks before the surgery they ask you to be on a liquid diet. How many people have been able to follow this? Is it hard? What if you don't do well with it? Does that slow the surgery at all?

Thanks in advance for any help. I know it is getting closer and I am getting excited, but I want to make sure that I am doing everything I have to to get the surgery going asap.

Hi Robyn,
First, congrats on getting most of your pre-op out of the way. I'll try to answer your questions the best I can

1. You definately want to follow the nutritionists plan as closely as you can. They are trying to help prepare you for your life post op and not to sound discouraging..but this definately is a lifestyle change that you need to be devoted to. There are many people who go through this surgery and then are disappointed when they dont lose like they want to and many times its because they are not following the guidelines so please try to follow it as closely as you can. Not to say you wont have the occassional fall because we all do it!

2. I would follow up with Dr Pohls office as you feel its necessary. Just give them a call and they can tell you which information is still needed and then you can contact the appropriate office.  I did have some information that was lost in the process and had to have it resent.

3. All of Dr Pohl and Dr Giovannis patients as well as some others have to go on the liquid diet. The point of this diet is multi faceted. First, losing some weight and eating healthy before the surgery helps to shrink the liver. This makes it much easier for Dr Pohl to do the surgery. If the liver is not in good shape, it can make it much more difficult and you could be prone to a complication. The first few days of the diet can be difficult, I wont lie to you. But after a few days it gets soooo much easier. Just remember why you're doing it. On the last day of the diet, you wont be allowed ANY food except the protein shakes. You MUST follow this. This could be dangerous for you and Dr Pohl will not perform the surgery if you eat the day before. In some cases he's been known to do an endoscope to make sure you havent eaten.

Best of luck to you!
