Back Pain

Ok so I went ot the Dr. for my back pain since I lost almost all of my weight and he referred me to an orthopedic surgeon. They fit me in for yesterday. They took x-rays and looked at my back and then came back with, "You have osteroprosis and arthritis your my spine." What I said I am only 36. He was baffled. He put me on Celeabrex and physical therapy. Here I was thinking it was because I lost so much muscle from weightloss. I am 36 year old who is in a 70 year old body. I have to say I felt better when I was 225 then 147. Does anyone else feel then same way?

I hear what your saying but,  I have had arthritis since I was in my late 20's . So it can happen. With the medication and the therapy you will feel better.  Once they get that pain to get better for you I don't think you will feel the same way about the wt loss.  I ended up having a hip replacement 5 months after bypass I never thought that would happen.  It has been a long road but I feel so much better with new hip and loss of wt.  Good Luck

I'm sorry that you are having back pain - it's kind of disappointing when you are expecting to avoid or get rid of the pain and now there is more.

I know that lack of calcium can lead to Osteoperosis - have you been taking enough Calcium Citrate?

Hi Kristen,

Do you have osteoporosis or osteoarthritis?

I totally understand the back pain and the osteoporosis! I'm 44 and some days I feel like I'm 70. I have osteoarthritis in my hips, lower back and right shoulder. I am taking my calcium daily along with 1,000 IU of vitamin D to help with the absorbtion. I had a total hysterectomy when I was 38 so that didn't help matters any with the chances of getting the osteoporosis. Now, with the RNY on top of that my PCP sent me for a Bone Density Scan which determined the osteoporosis.

The Osteoporosis isn't what's causing all my pain. It's the Osteoarthritis. Some days it's down right debilitating!!! I take Tylenol arthritis to ease the pain most days. Some nights I have to take Vicodin to get me to sleep at night.

I do have to say, though, it's better than it used to be at 268 lbs! I really did think it would be better than what it is but I'll take this over what I had any day.

I hope you feel better soon. Keep warm, it's important. It really does help the pain. And MOVE, MOVE, MOVE even if it hurts! Otherwise, it'll hurt more.

Good luck!

Jules

Hi Kristen,
I'm so sorry you're having these issues , but I can sympathise. I never had many problems at 331 pounds, but now at 152 I have aches in my back all the time. My PCP also gave me a slip to get X-rays and said that I probably have arthritis in my back as well, but never noticed it with all the weight I was carrying.
I havent gotten the X-ray done yet, as we just changed insurance but know you're not alone and I'll let you know what comes of my X-rays.

The Dr. did mention ostearthritis but I sworn he sia dI have osteoprosis. I go for therapy on Tuesday and am going to ask the PT what I actually have. I was not sure what questions to as after he told me that so my mother will come with me the next visit. Is anyone on Celebrex? The mornings are hard for me because if I wake up at five for a bathroom break I can't get to sleep again because the pain is so bad. My Aunt asked me when he didn't put me on Boniva or some bone med , so that is another question I will ask when I go back. Also I was reading the info on celebrex and it says may cause stomache ulcer. Oh great I told my ortho I could not take asprin but maybe because I am on nexium like med it will help. I do stay active but my family yells at me I guess they think I can't do anything.  Just having the hernia surgery doesn't make my mobility any better either.Pretty soon I will be walking around with a walker and my tennis balls on the feet LOL. I will keep u posted, as I go next Tuesday for my first therpy appt. I hope to make the next  meeting, unless it is the week of Christmas.

I was also given the Celebrex for my back by my PCP. It concerned me and I called Dr Pohls office because Celebrex is an NSaid and we're not supposed to take those but when I called Dr Pohls office he said its ok to take.
Luckily, the pain hasnt gotten that bad for me and I havent had to take it yet.

Kristen,

I hope you feel better soon and therapy does the trick for you.

Have you thought of requesting a Bone Density Scan? Especially if your PCP is already saying you have osteo-porosis. It really should be confirmed.

You can always call Dr. P's office to tell them about the Celebrex and see if there's a substitute you can take that's just as good but won't threaten your stomach.

Please let us know how you're feeling. Your pain is our pain. As you know, we feel bad when someone else feels badly.

Keep your head up!

Jules

I was really dumbfounded when I found out about my back so I forgot to ask the right questions. I am going to call Dr. Pohl to make sure this med is ok for my stomache. I am on omeprizol not sure if that is how you spell it but it is suppose to work like Nexium. I told the Dr. I could not have asprin because of my stomach, so maybe he is leaving me on it for a little while not long term. It does help but in the mornings the pain is bad and if I sit to long it starts to hurt. I start therapy Tuesday and am looking forward to it. I will let you know how I make out with Dr. Pohl and therapy. I want to attend next months meeting but how close to Christmas is it? I would love to meet everyone.
