OK.... I started this journey back in June when I made my appt with Dr. V.  Have been "lurking" on this forum since then and have been inspired by all of you.  I have had my US, Echo Stress Test, Sleep Study, Have the nutritionist next week, then psychiatrist, then endoscopy, and finally an UGI on Nov 6.  I am hoping to have surgery at the beginning of December, what do you think my chances are?

What should I expect after surgery?  If I have the surgery at the beginning of December, how long before I can return to work?  (having bypass).... Also, I need to attend a support group, but Miriam's support group meets on Tuesdays and I work that night....... when does the one at RIH meet.... I really need to build a support system of people who understand.....

Hello and welcome to the message board.   I had bypass back in April of this year.  I can tell you from what I went though, but everyone is a little differant.  I remember what everyone told me to do after surgery was to get up and walk walk walk and to sip sip sip sip.  Trust me it does work. Makes thing easy at least for me it did.  I ended up spending 6 day in the hospital but that was only because when they changed my pain medication I got sick with the change.  They wanted to make sure I was gonna be ok.   For the most part you spend 3 to 4 days at the hospital.  This  was at Roger Williams Hospital that is.  I came home and kept up the walking and the sipping. Within the 2nd week is when I started to feel so much better.  I ended up being out of work for 4-5 weeks and back to work I went.  I was so happy at 1st you loose the wt.  very quick but, it does slow down a little after.  I have lost so far 141lbs.   I know RI hosp support group meets the 1st weds of the month .  Roger Williams support group meet the 4th thur of the month.  That is the one I got to it's time is 6-730pm  plus after the meeting a lot of us stick around talking. I love the support groups they really work.  To me they are my 2nd family.  Anytime you need to ask a question  ask it.  I can tell you someone here will have an answer for you.  Welcome again and best of luck.  Your jouney has just beginning on getting your life back.

Thanks for the great info!!!!!!!! Did you attempt to lose weight before the surgery?... I'm ashamed to say that I have been looking at every meal as a last "opportunity".  I plan to discuss this with the nutritionist tomorrow.  Also, what supplements are needed post surgery - would it be beneficial to start a vitamin/mineral routine prior to having surgery? ****tte

The 1st time I went to Doctor's office I wt in at 322 lbs then For the next 2 months I gain went up to 345lbs  I like you was looking at everything as my last  meal. I eat and eat and eat.  Shame on me.  The doctor I had make us fast 2 weeks before surgery.  protein drinks and a light meal at night.   I lost 22lbs from that 2 week fast.   I got my protein shake and vit. from the doctor office.  I also learned about a drink called ISOPURE come in many differant kinds.  Really good stuff. You can buy it at the GNC stores.  it has 45g of  protein. in one drink. I still try to drink one of them a day to help me get in the protein that we need to get in a day. Plus I like it better then the Shakes.

Don't get down on yourself I think we all look at food as our last meal before the sugery.  Once you have this you will never look back on that again.  I have lost 141lbs  since april   If I can do this anyone can.

Lisa

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Thanks to all who answered, especially the advice and suggestions of Lisa.  I need support through this journey, and although I have family support, I feel they do not quite understand because they have not "walked" in my shoes.  I am sure I will have lots of questions For everyone.......Colette
