Hunger after surgery

Hello Everyone,

I have asked a few people if they experienced hunger when they went home from the hospital.  The first few days were awful for me.  I felt so hungry but could only put liquids in me.  It got better once I was able to eat mushies but I just wish someone would have said that being hungry after surgery is a possibility.  I just thought I wouldn't have a real appetite for 6 months to a year.  Today I started pureed food.  I meausure my food out but feel like I could still eat more.  Anyone else like this?  I won't eat more because I don't want to hurt myself.  Just wondering if anyone else has had an experience like this.

I had the band and wasn't hungry for two weeks.  By the third week and I was very hungry and just being able to have something other than shakes felt so good - I will never forget that first sip of chicken broth.  Once I got to mushies forget it - I was all good.

Thanks for your reply.  I see you had Dr. Pohl also.  He is a wonderful doctor!  I am doing much better now that I am on pureed food, but right out of the hospital, I was starving and didn't anticipate that.  Anyhow, thanks for your thoughts.

I had this as well and it tends to creep back every so often. I found it to be head hunger and not that I was actually hungary. It may seem that it is not head hunger that you are really hungry but it was just my mind still thinking the old way. I tred to distrct my self with other things or try to drink some water or crystal light first..
Hope this helps

Hi, thanks.  Yes, I'm doing ok now that I can eat something w/ substance.  When it happened though, I called my doctor's office and they said it was physical as well as mental.  So, why didn't anyone say this could happen??  At least I could have mentally prepared for it.  I was shocked when I was starving after surgery.  Anyhow, thanks for your input, I appreciate everyone's feedback.

My surgery was on 8-20-08 and I was also starving. Everyone I spoke to who had the surgery asked me if I could eat most of a scrambled egg or half a cup of yogurt.  I got scared because I could eat a whole egg, or a whole cup of yogurt and didn't even feel full. Now that I have eaten more "normal" food I feel a lot less hungry. I still find myself stopping when I feel I have eaten enough, not because I feel full. I don't want to feel pains in my stomach later from having eaten too much.
