Cost of Lap Band w/out insurance
Hi,
Keep in mind that the 80% the insurance covers is 80% of what's Usual & Customary. Meaning...they cover 80% of what THEY think the surgery should cost.
Therefore, if the surgery is $20,000 and they think it should cost no more than $15,000. They will only cover 80% up to the $15,000.
According to Dr. Pohl and Dr. Giovanni, at their seminar, they say they charge $13,000 whether you get RNY or Lapband. I know that some docs do have finance options through a pre-arranged finance company. However, I don't know which docs or which companies.
Good luck to your friend!

great explanation Julie! Also, keep in mind that hospitals have "contracts" with some insurance companies - in that case you will only pay 20% of the contractual rate - which in some cases is about 40% discount off of the actual price of service.
Nancy - when you checked your blue cross claim - did you notice that the $23000 was what blue cross paid? That may have been the charge for the service - but niki's 20% will be based on what blue cross paid.
Niki - check with the hospital performing the lap band - more than likely they will accept payments on your balance once your friend's insurance has paid their part.
Good luck to your friend!
