Lipton Onion Soup Meatloaf Recipe

Hi - is the lipton onion soup meatloaf recipe ok for us to eat?  I've made it with turkey instead of beef and it comes out ok.  I was just starting to wonder about the calories and such with the finished product:  1 package of the onion soup mix is 20 calories per serving (serves 8), then you add 3/4 bread crumb(that might be bad), 2 eggs, 1/3 c ketchup and 1/3 c water.  It's my favorite meatloaf recipe - hope it's doable.

Okay - I'm off to to see a new psychologist - wish me luck!

Hi Jules! My only concern with the Lipton Onion Soup mixes is the sodium content. It will cause you to retain a ton of water and add extra weight to the scale... I definitely limit my sodium intake as much as possible!

Maybe try fresh onion chopped up or maybe some onion powder - both have much less sodium!

THanks for the idea, Laura.  I'm such a dope - I never even consider sodium since I don't even cook with salt.  How much sodium is too much?  By the way, you are doing great!  Jules

Mmmm, sounds yummy!

Laura's right about the sodium. If it were me, I would make sure there are several servings so it cuts down on it. So I would use more meat and.....

1 pkg soup mix

1/2C egg beaters

1/3C Reduced sugar ketchup

3/4C crushed roasted soy nuts (found in produce isle of Stop&Shop)

2 lbs 93% Lean hamburger

If you're making it in a bread pan, it can make around 8 servings (or more) reducing your calorie, sugar/carb and sodium count while keeping a good protein count.

Have a good (yummy) one!

ohhhhhhhh, that sounds yummy - have you made it before?  I also am going to make it in the petite loaf pans (got the idea from eggface) so it will make 8 little loafs.  I didn't even think about reduced sugar ketchup!  You're good!  Jules

I buy a meat loaf mix made by Tempo.  I get it at Shaw's.  You only add 1 egg and 1/3 cup of warm water, then use 1 pound of ground beef (I used 93% lean) or ground turkey.   you can probably cut the fat and cals by using egg beaters instead of the egg.   The sodium is not bad when you consider that is for the whole loaf.  The nutri info is as follows:

Serv size per container   aprrox 7
Calories     Mix  - 40    Prepared - 150

total fat  7 g
sodium 400 mg
carbs 7g
prot 13g

Thanks for the ideas, Cara.  I used Tempo a long time ago and forgot about it - I'll try it again in search of the perfect, healthy meatloaf lol  Good idea with egg beaters, too.  Thanks!  Jules

I think another great hint with meatloaf is- make it in muffin tins rather than a loaf pan.  It really helps you limit your portion size.  Right now with no restriction- we have to try sooo hard to do that.  I am trying so hard to measure all the time and limit myself.

I have also found- more water (try for 80 oz)=less hunger

Hi Beth, using smaller pans is a great idea.  I am still having a hard time but now I'm making bad choices, too.  I'm under lots of stress right now.  I started to see someone to talk to in hopes to find out why I'm self-sabotaging and fix it.  How many fills do you have now?  I'll be getting my 3rd next time I see the doc in a few weeks.  Good luck to you, too!  Jules

Hey everyone.. just and FYI.. if you like the onion taste in meatloaf (or anything really), but not the chunks of onion.. just grate it (by hand or processor) It gives things a great flavor boost and you dont have to bite into a giant onion. Also Mrs Dash makes some great add-ons/ins. Check them out... Sodium Free!!!!
