What's your average protein consumption a day?

I ask this because I am aiming at 60-80 grams a day. I usually get in around 70 or so.

How much is too much protein?

I swim for an hour six days a week now (water aerobics and such) and meet with my personal trainer but he's new to the GBP surgery stuff.

Should I be taking in more protein because of moving (burning about 400 cals a day and consuming about 600 a day)?

I'm on 'target' as far as my NUT goes but still wondering what you all think about the subject.

Where are/were you at 8 weeks out?

Thanks!

Jules

I talked with my NUT today and she said you can never get too much protein. I'm 1 week out and having a hard time getting it all in....already tired of the same ole drinks!

Thanks Soxy!

I'm sure your NUT is meaning you can't get too much protein at this stage for you because it's so hard to get it all in, early on.

I know too much protein, like everything else, converts to fat. And too much protein can put a strain on your kidneys, as well as, your liver.

I guess I'll stick with the 60 to 80 per day. Seems I'm right on track for now.

Don't be afraid to try different drinks. If you can go to the Miriam Hospital Meeting on the fourth Tuesday, August 26th. The dietician, Meg, may be bringing in several different kinds of shakes for us to test.

Also, you can check out www.vitalady.com. They have samples you can order so you don't have to waste your money on a big tub then end up not using it all!

AND, go to many area meetings and join us at my pool party on August 16th! Only WLS friendly foods and shakes will be served.

Have a happy Thursday!

I was told to aim for 65 grams a day with the lapband.  I actually have no problem getting this in between dairy and meats.  The RNY guidelines are I think between 70-80 grams of protein.  The problem with too much protein is- unused it converts to fat.

Sounds like you are on track!

I am struggling to get in 30-40 grams of protein per day. I have NO appetite and the thought of shakes is not so good. Lately I have only been getting in 1, maybe two 1/4 cup meals per day, and one, if I am SUPER on top of things, two shakes per day. But I am not exercising. You are my hero with all that you get in!!!!!!! I would say you are doing great!

Marie, getting the protein in does get easier the further out you are.  One thing with Julie- everytime I see her, she has one of her bottled protein drinks with her though and is sipping away on it.  I think she drinks the Isopure ones- kind of like a crystal light

Thanks Alexia! I have the grape Isopure and will try that with LOTS of ice. Now that I drink mostly water, even the flavored waters are too sweet. The ice should dilute it a bit though. And, afterall, I did spend $40 on a case of it so I better drink it!!

Jules,
I wanted to tell you that I saw Dr. Roye last week.  I told him that I was getting in between 65-80 grams of protein a day.  Of course, he want's  me to get most of it from my food, but he also made a good point.  He warned me to watch the calories in the protein supplements, beacuse if I ate the protein instead of drinking it, I probably wouldn't get as many calories.  Make sense?  It does to me, although I think that I have a small pouch because I still can't eat more that 3 tbs at a time.  He wasn't worried though.  I am going to make an appt with my nut.
How are you doing?
