Giving Blood.?.?. Is it okay?

I'm eight weeks out (RNY) today.

Bally's (the gym where I swim each day) is havinga  Blood Drive tomorrow! I really, really want to participate.

I called Dr. Pohl's office to ask if it's okay. He was in surgery all day today. I won't get the answer in time to decide about giving blood.

What do you think?

Too soon?

Sorry Jules,

I actually had the same question because I had some surgery in May and we have a blood drive on Friday. Today, I was given a number to call to find out the answer, but never had a chance to call because of meetings.  Someone out there may have the answer, if not give the RI Blood Bank a call before you go.

I've wondered the same thing.  I actually asked the woman who calls to schedule appts to me if she knew - she didn't - so I had to ask her to remove me from list to call until I found out.  I tend to have trouble donating due to lack of iron, so I'm thinking I might not be able to donate now with my lack of absorption from RNY.  Please let me know what you find out as I'm a firm believer in this "gift".

Hello Ladies,

I will do just that, make a phone call to the blood bank before going. I will certainly let you know what, if anything, I find out on the subject.

Of course, if I get just one yes and 12 no's, I'll probably do it anyway.

Will post tomorrow!

Thanks for you time!

This is a question I keep forgetting to ask Dr Roye.  I used to do the 4 times a year program, but haven't done it since last winter (was sick with strepe forever- then had surgery in March).  I have a blood drive next week I am thinking of going to.

One of the questions that they ask you on intake is if you have had surgery within a year.  That doesn't necessarily mean that you can't donate though.  One of the nurses at the blood center should be able to answer that.

Well, I went. I asked. They said no. At least not until 9 months or so after surgery AND I have my doc's permission. Bummer! Thanks for you time everyone!

I did try to donate blood once and when I told my sugeon she said she would prefer I wait until I'm one year post op.  I didn't get a chance to donate that time however, I had just come back from a long jog and nothing was coming out.

For those of you who are a year post op and would like to donate I along with the Knights of Columbus Sullivan Council will be hosting a blood drive Sunday, August 10th from 8am to 1pm @ the K of C on Claremont St. (off off Lonsdale ave)in Central Falls.  This is the 3rd Annual Blood drive in honor of my daughter, Chezney *****ceived blood transfusions while she was undergoing chemotherapy.
