Started a diet

Ok so while waiting for a dr appointment or an progress during my search for WLS I started a diet.  1000 calories a day I am miserable *****y and HUNGRY!!!  I went to the Center for Medical weightloss in East Greenwhich - yeah they are all gimmicks, I know but I figured what the hell at least they are docotrs and not just regular people who took a two day class in nutrition!

SO anyway I told them I just want nutrtional counseling and no pills or anything like that.  They put me on a 1000 cal diet.  I have lost 10 lbs in a week.  I know it is GOOD but I am afraid I will get below a bmi that would qualify me for WLS... what is a girl to do? Keep dieting and risk missing out on wls and gain it back in a bit or stop dieting until I see a Dr?

That's a really tough choice.  I was in the same boat.  I was borderline for the surgery and didn't want to lose the weight beforehand because I really wanted the surgery.  I knew I could lose it, but I couldn't sustain it.  Good luck with your decision.

Hi Jayne! I havent seen you on the boards before - I know I would have recognized your avatar! I love it! I used to horseback ride many years ago when I was a young teenager and I cant wait to do it again - it's one of my major goals post - op!

Your horse is beautiful!!! Do you own him?

Congratulations on your 10 lb loss! That's awesome! I know for me, I could lose weight but never keep it off - so I know what you mean, I would feel like it was defeating the purpose. I guess it all comes down to being healthy. Losing weight will help you be healthier - which ever way you choose to lose it.

Good luck!

I guess, if you're trying to get yourself ready for the WLS journey you can start by making sure you:

Eat your protein first & getting all of it in every day.

Don't drink before, during or after meals (it'll help keep you full).

Chew your food 25 times each bite.

Make sure to drink at least 64 oz of clear, non-calorie fluids a day

Don't forget your vitamins every day (including Calcium)

This is a tough spot you're in. I guess, if it were me, I would probably, maybe, not 'diet' and just try to start following the post-op eating plan and moderate my food intake by not putting unhealthy foods into my system.

I don't know your history so I don't know what you've been through in the past with diets and gaining. Also, I don't know if you have any medical issues. However, I can suggest that if your BMI is below 45 now, check out the Light Weights forum and see what you get for suggestions there!

Good luck!

Have a great weekend!

I was in the same boat, just barely at a BMI of 40.  I also had no co-morbidities, so would not qualify under 40 (some insurances will cover 35 BMI with co-morbidities like diabetes, sleep apnea, etc)

I know part of your requirement is a medically supervised diet, and you are doing this for that.  Congrats on your 10 pounds lost!!!  I would stick with the diet, see where it leads you.  You most likely will still qualify, if not immediately- you will later and have fufilled your requirement.  Either way- you are getting healthier
