I am hoping someone can help me...I am having a problem with my band and called the answering service...the Dr on call knows NOTHING about the lap band!!  I called back the answering service and Dr Roye is not on call tomorrow either...soooo frustrated...I asked if I went to the ER if anyone could help me with my band and maybe even an unfill and the Dr was not even sure...he has no clue about the band or complications.

I really need to talk to Dr Roye and don't know what to do....help!!

I am a patient of Dr. Roye but I haven't had a problem with my band as of yet.  I would imagine that if you called the office & got the answering serivce & explained the situation, they should get you one of the doctors that know about wls.  I hope your situation gets better.  Sorry I can't be of more help.

hi Kristen - I would think if you're having a problem with your band you should head right into the ER.  Complications can be dangerous and only a doctor can decide how much of a complication it is.  I would think if you went to RI hospital's ER - they would find someone there that deals with the band.

Good Luck to you!

Did the doctor say that he didn't know anything about the band?  When you said that you were having issues what did he say?  I would think that if he didn't know about band complications that he could page someone who does?  Also, you must call the office first thing on Monday and complain because his whole handling of this seems dangerous!

Hi Danielle,

The doc on call blatently said he knew nothing about the band.  When I explained to him about a slip he said that it was probably a stomach bug or just esophagus irritation from vomiting.  I am going to do liquids all day today and call him tomorrow.  He told me he didn't even know if there would be anyone to unfill me if I went to the ER and being almost 2 years out why would I want to do that!!

I am still having pain today..not as bad, but even liquids is making my stomach have spasm type feelings.  I am so upset that he would have someone on call that has not a clue about the band!!  This is the 1st time I have had an issue and had to use the on call....If it gets worse I am going to go to the ER and demand they call Dr Roye and they will be getting an earful about the docs on call...that is just wrong!!

I vomited on Thursday and right into Friday I felt like something was stuck...from then on, I have had pain whenever I tried to even drink anything...I have been sticking to liquids for the past few days and nothing seems to work...sooo frustrated..even burping hurts my abdomen!!

Thanks so much for the reply..BTW..you have done FABULOUS!!  You look amazing..I don't post much but I see you over here and on the LB board and have seen your progress...WAY TO GO GIRL!!!!

Hi Kristen,

I am a patient of Dr. Roye, but unfortunately I don't have much advice for you.  I know that I was told that if I had abdominal pain that lasted for more than a couple of hours to head directly to the ER.  Your situation is just plain scary and I hope that you are ok.  I just assumed that if I had to call after hours or go to the ER that there would be a knowledgeable person to help me!  Will the answering service paige Kathleen the NP?  She may take your situation a little more seriously than someone who knows nothing about the band.

Keep us posted on how you are,  I would certainly be giving several people an earful.  This situation is just wrong.

Hey Jenny..The on call will only page the Dr on call.  I love Kathleen...she is awesome.  I think either her, Dr R or the other band doc in the practice should rotate for on call...I was really disappointed in the on call.  I called the service again to see who was on call today and it was not a band doc either.  I am doing warm liquids today and Sandy on the lap band board (who is an RN, has the band and works for a band doc) told me that it is most likely a swollen stoma but to call and get a slight unfill on monday until it heals.  It is driving me crazy because I still have pain...burping, hiccuping, drinking...not as severe as yesterday, but still there.  I am going to try to get an appt as soon as I get out of work tomorrow and talk to Dr Roye personally about the on call situation and what to do next time.  I didn't want to go to the ER and see a house doc who knew nothing about the band..I don't need anyone guessing what is wrong or having someone inexperienced poke at my band.

I wish Kathleen was on call and will ask if there is ever a problem in the future if at least SHE can be paged for questions...she definitely would have known who at RIH could help me.  The Dr on call was not even sure that anyone would be on to help me with a slight unfill..Not too comforting...

PS..congrats on your 35lb loss in such a short time...you ROCK!!

Kristen,

I was a patient of Dr. Roye's.  I had a problem with my band, so i called the office, he wasn't on call.  The doctor on call told me that he couldn't determine what the problem was until I was seen, so I went to the ER. I couldn't tolerate the pain.  I had my band removed and now I am completely pain free.  If you are experiencing any type of pain you should be checked out.  Just my opinion.

Hi Nancy,

Thanks for the reply.  Holy mackeral!!  What happened that made you have to have the band out??  That is my biggest fear!  I have been drinking warm tea all day and plan to call him tomorrow and hope to get in after work...even if I have to meet him in the ER tomorrow night when he is done with office hours.   Did they get anyone with band knowlege in the ER for you?  When I asked the Dr on call if there would be anyone there if I needed an unfill he said...why would you need an unfill...you are almost 2 years out why would you do that...umm it made me nervous and he told me that he could not guarantee there would be anyone there to unfill me even a little bit.

I did call back to see if he was on call today and it was a different doc than today...but still not a band doc so I decided to wait till tomorrow.  Even liquids are giving me spazm like pains but not as severe as yesterdays episodes.

Did you or are you having a revision or having another band put in?  So sorry you had trouble and had to have it removed..that is my fear right now and I hope I didn't do anything to screw it up...

Thanks

Kristen

Kristen

They told me at the ER that they thought it was an erosion.  Ironically I saw Dr. Roye that afternoon and he had scheduled an endoscopy. I waited to have the endoscopy a couple of days later.  Stayed on liquids in the meantime,  I actually put  myself on liquids for a couple of weeks before when the pain first started.  My problem was the pain even when I didn't eat and vomiting.  The doctor who did the endoscopy told me that he thought the band had slipped because I only had a less than 5 CC pouch,  Dr. Roye on the other had said that it did not slip and that he tends to place the band high because there less of a chance of a slip, and that it was up to me if I wanted it out.  I had no choice but to take it out to see if that was causing the pain, I couldn't stand it anymore.  I wish he could have done something else. The pain was so bad in the hospital that at one time the nurse thought I was having a heart attack.  After it was taken out I was told that I couldn't have it put back.  I was so mad, I loved my band.  Now I am doing everything in my power to keep the 75 lbs off.  But I feel as though it may be a battle that I'm  not gonna win.  Please don't jump to anything conclusions until you talk to him.  If you can tolerate the pain it may just be an irritation, for me I couldn't even think straight.  PM me if you want to hear the rest of the story.

Nancy
