Has anyone had surgery and been on throyid meds and had to reduce their meds after surgery? I had a blood test recently the first one in two years for my throyid.  My doc's office called and said that the throyid test showed that I was taking too much Synthroid.   She wants to me stop taking one of my pills.  I know that if I do this I will start to gain lbs back.  I kind of knew that maybe the meds were going to be reduced since i had lost a lot of weight.  She wants me to stop one of the pills right away.  I think that I should not stop the pill right away but maybe reduce it slowly as I had this happen once many years ago and I gained quite a bit of weight.  I didnt speak to her but to one of the medical assistants.  I probably will call the office this week, but I am interested in knowing if anyone here has had to do the same thing and how did they make out.   Thanks, Carol B

problem with thyroid bloodwork is that it is interperative.  There are acceptable ranges, and some people do fine in one end or another, others don't.  Even different types of thyroid disease can show fine on bloodwork- but still causing issues.  I have Hastimoto's Thyroid- which basically means that my immune system attacks my thyroid and trys to shut it down.  A lot of times my bloodwork shows fine- but my gland is pressing in on my throat- sometimes making it hard to swallow.  That is a way I know FOR SURE that my meds are off.  This is usually diagnosed with an ultrasound.  I fought for 3 years before my Dr finally agreed with me that my levels were off, then one day he looked back on the old results and said boy- they were low.  GRRRR!! ok- I went off on a tangent but really didn't answer your question.  Thyroid hormones usually are not a medication that would have to change due to weight loss.  Have you been on the same doseage for a long time?  I know it can take a while to get a "correct dose" I really recommend reading the Complete Thyroid Book- I borrowed it from the library.  It had some great info- a lot you probably already know, but some you may not. Hope you get it straightened out!!

Good Morning Alexia, Yes, I have been on Synthroyid for many many years.  I have been on this particular amount for a long time.  Like I said in my post, I thought maybe I would have to have it adjusted because of the weight loss, but I feel good on what I am on now even though my pcp wants me to lower it.  I just hope I dont gain weight going off one of the pills that I take.  She wants me to take another blood test in 4 to 6 weeks.  Wow 3 years is a long time to find out that your levels were off.  How are you feeling now that you are on the correct meds?   Thanks for the info on the throyid book.   Carol b

My Dad had his removed due to cancer and every time he gained or lost weight they had to adjust his meds.  Not sure if that helps, but that was what he experienced. Jen

Since my surgery- I can feel my levels are off again- so I know I need to go and get bloodwork done.  I never felt my levels were right for me anyways- was still always cold, could never lose weight, and always tired.  That is what I mean by the levels being up for interpretation.  What one Dr sees as fine- another sees as low.  I think I am going to look into a specialist for me, esp with my throat doing this and I have a small cyst in the last sonogram. But enough about me.... Gaining weight is a sign of it being off, along with hair loss, being cold, tired, and a few others.  Most of them come with a large swing in levels.  If you see a weight change of more than 5 pounds after 2 weeks- I would definately call and see if you could get the bloodwork then.    If I remember right there are 2 or 3 TH tests they do.  I think most now screen for all and that is important to get the whole picture. Sorry I don't have a "been through it" answer, but I have an empathetic ear and am going through it again with ya!

Thank you so much for the information re: the signs other than the weight gain.  I was taking the generic throyid meds last year and asked the doc for Synthroyd because I was so cold in the winter.  I could never warm up.  I would wear 3 or 4 shirts and keep the heat up to 72 plus.  Ever since I went to the name brand like I was taking before I started to feel better.  She put me on the generic because she said it was the same.  I say some generics are not the same, I felt the difference in a couple of days.  I am going to slowly wean myself off one of the pills.  I have been on them for so many years that going slowly isnt going to hurt  me.   Yes, an endrocronoligist (spelling) ??? is the best for you especially for your throat and the cyst.  Good LUck and let me know how you make out.
