Jenny- how did the apts go??
The apointment with Robin was great! She is amazing. I spent an hour with her and left with so much information. Now I feel completely ready. It is so nice to know that she is only a phone call away and actually has the information I need and will take the time to speak to me. Thank you again for the recommendation! I know they need to give people choices for appointments, but I think they should take the other nutritionist off the list or educate her a little more.
Robin or her staff will visit me in the hospital and then I will see her in six weeks! It was great. I went yesterday and got my protein, vitamins and calcium.
So I went to Dr. Roye yesterday. Everything looks good and I have a date for June 3rd. I'm so excited!!!!!!!
I do have some questions for you like what was the hospital stay like? what did you bring with you? how long until you were up and about? driving? exercising?
Sorry for the question attack. I though of this stuff after I left and I thought who better to ask but a pro!!
Thanks
I am so glad you have your date and feel ready for this!! I really felt Robin prepared me and I was so glad to see part of her staff in the hospital again to make sure I knew what I was in for. I brought nothing to the hospital (I was actually surprised that I was going to be spending the night- I thought I was going to be outpatient for some reason). I had my cell phone with me, whatever was in my purse, and the loose fitting clothes I wore in.
You will be in a hospital gown- so no need to bring jammies or anything. They will give you a pair of the compression stockings to prevent blood clots. I went in at 10, think 10:30 or 11 was surgery, and was in a room by 2:30 or 3pm. Nothing to eat/drink the first day, just ice chips. Sounds like you would be hungry- but you are not. I was ready to get up and walk around by probably 5pm or so. My room had a reclining chair, so once I was up & out of the bed, I stayed in this till I was ready for bed.
I brought a book, but never read more than 3 or 4 pages of it, just couldn't concentrate on it. I had chapstick for dry lips- this was useful.
so- loose fitting clothes to go home in with slip on shoes (you won't quite feel up to bending down & tying)
toiletries- toothpaste, brush, etc (if you forget something- they have it there)
book or magazine
chapstick
phone numbers of people to call (I will PM you my number- please call me with an update of how you are doing and I will post)

Jenny,
Congrats on your date, are you going to the post op teaching on the 29th? I will be there too, my surg is on the 5th. Which protein drink did you get? I am really confused as to which one I should get. I am also confused about what I should be buying in preparation for the surg. Any suggestions?

I am having the band so I will not be at the post op. I purchased the Designer Whey unflavored so I can mix it with other things. My mom had RNY three years ago and she uses one from Vitamin World that is their brand. That one only comes in vanilla, strawberry and chocolate. I have tried it and it is pretty good. Do some research on your own before you go to the vitamin store. I was very, very intimidated. They are kind of aggressive there now and want to sell you everything. I went knowing what I was going to purchases and nothing extra. He immeidately directed me to some protein powder that is 65.00 vs. the one I purchsed for 35.00, saying that it was much better. Then he goes on to tell me that he is new and only been there a short time, so obviously they are trying to sell the most expensive products to you even if they aren't what you need. Do some research now and go armed wtih information and don't let them sway you. He even tried to sell me the "top of the line" shaker cup! Maybe even try a smaller local nutrition store? You can also order on line and avoid the store all together. That's what I will do in the future.
They will probably go over all of this at the post op class. Did you get a vitimin list yet? I'm not sure what your diet is post op? I think they go over all of this with you.

I am going to the class on the 29th, but I want to be as prepared as I can be. I wish that we could buy a sample pack of different protein drinks. I hate to spend a ton of money, and not like the product. I have been taking vitamins for months now, and I am still low in iron. Thanks for the info!!

What do you think about the low carb slim fast? I don't know if it will be too thick, or should I go for thick instead of thin? Any other names I should look for?
