I NEED ADVICE!!

My appointment with Dr. Ryder is May 22nd. I have a problem though... I am finishing up my BA in Education and am taking two summer classes. One starts on May 20 and goes until June 20. The next class starts just a week and a half later. IS THERE ANY WAY POSSIBLE THAT I COULD HAVE THE SURGERY AND ATTEND THE CLASS THE NEXT WEEK?????? The classes are Mondays and Wed from 9am-1pm. I know I can get up and walk around to keep the circulation moving, etc. Here is my reasoning....I wont be able to have it until the end of that class otherwise, which isnt until the end of July (classes are 5 weeks long). So that would put me potentially into the beginning of Aug. The problem lies in that I have to be ready to student teach kindergartners beginning on the last week of Aug or the first week in Sept.  SO.... 1) Have it and recoup a bit for a week. I wont be working, just sitting in class twice a week.  OR 2) Have it, recoup for maybe one month, and then jump into a pretty demanding and full-time situation. Waiting until next January is out of the question as I am sure you can all understand. THOUGHTS AND HELP WOULD BE SO APPRECIATED!! Marie

Marie, I wish I could help you with this but I think it's a matter of talking to Dr. Ryder AND prioritizing your goals in a way that suits YOU best. I hope things work out for you! please let us know what you decide! Jules

Marie,  I had RNY on 8/14/07, and started a class 2 weeks later.  I was not impossible but uncomfortable the first couple of weeks.  Sitting in the desk,  I found my self squirming at times.   Hope that helps.

If you are having LapBand....I would ask Dr. Ryder to schedule you after June 20th but ASAP. That would give you about 1 week to recoop before the 2nd class starts up. You should be fine a week out. The classes aren't that long (9-1) and you won't be doing anything physical.   Good luck!

I personally could have gone back after about 5 days.  I felt great!  But everyone is different and you HAVE to heal.  Take it slow and take care of yourself. Jen

Thanks everyone! I am having the RNY and am nervous but don't have much of a choice except to put it off or not take the class. I will do some more thinking and hope for the soonest appt! I am just so excited to start this new journey.

Hi! I'm a grad student and I ended up taking two weeks off for the surgery and I'm working with children this semester.  I'm really glad I took the two weeks.  It would have been possible to sit through a class a week out I think, but I would have been pretty grumpy about it.  I had a lot of back pain after the surgery (maybe from the operating table and hospital bed?) and pain at the incision sites that made walking not a lot of fun (but I did it anyway).  Also, I would fall asleep really easily that first week.   I was off pain meds though by the time I got home from the hospital and only occasionally took tylenol (EZ tabs, extra strength) as needed.   By the second week I felt fantastic and I haven't really had any pain since.  I guess you just have to decide if it's ok being uncomfortable during class. Good luck!
