Hi all.  Well, I had my first appointment at Dr. Roye's office today and I already have my appointments set up for my psych eval, sleep study and nutrion eval.   Does anyone have any advice for a newbie? Patty

Hi Patty! What kind of advice are you looking for? I went through a different surgeon, so I wouldnt be much help in that area...I also had Gastric Bypass. What surgery are you having?

Good luck with your journey! The RI OH Board is a GREAT group of people who are all friends and all very supportive of each other. If you need anything, we're here for you!!!

Hi Laura.  I too am having the bypass.  I guess I am looking for any helpful hints at getting through my preop stuff as easily as possible.  I am being told it could be up to 8 months before I have my surgery.  Did you have any complications from the surgery? Patty

Hi Patty! Welcome to our group! As Laura said, we are all friends here and we are always up to making more friends! There are three support groups in the area...Rhode Island Hospital, 1st Wednesdays....Roger Williams, 4th Thursdays and Miriam Hospital, 4th Tuesdays of every month. They're all 6 - 7:30pm. I started my journey on February 14th by going to Dr Pohl & Dr Giovanni's seminar. I finished all my pre-op testing except my endoscopy prior to my first appt with Dr. Pohl this past Monday. If all continues to go well, I should have my surgery around Mid-May. I found the hardest and most stressing part was working through my PCP to get all my referrals into my insurance (I have Tricare). Other than that...I got organized and started making phone call after phone call until all my appointments were lined up. I'm having RNY and can't wait. Well, hope to see you here often! Any questions, please ask away! WELCOME! Jules

Hi Patty.  I have Dr Roye also (LOVE him!!!) and just had lapband surgery last week.  The longest tests to schedule are those you already have on your books, so you are ahead of the curve.   Biggest thing about Dr Roye- DO NOT gain any weight from today until your final apt with him to go over the tests.  He will not think you are serious about the surgery.  I freaked about this and just to make sure I was good, did a quick slim fast diet before I saw him again.  Lost 10 lbs and he couldn't have been more thrilled. This group is amazing and so supportive!  Feel free to ask away!

Hi.  Thanks for the advice.  Did you have any post-op problems?

Other than being miserable on phase I of the post op diet towards the last few days, no.  I am exactly a week today and went tonight and took a stained glass class.  I am soooo ready to get out of the house!!!!  (but still not allowed to drive till next week)

What is the post op diet?  Was your surgery done laproscopically?

The post op diet you will get from your nutritionist.  It is different food you can eat during different weeks after your surgery.  It allows your stomach the time it needs to heal.  One my first week, I was allowed clear liquids only.  This was broth, water, crystal light, apple or cranberry juice, jello, or SF popsicles.  I have now progressed to full liquids.  This is fat free cream soups, lite yogurt, protien shakes with skim milk, and SF pudding.  Depending on your surgery, your diet may differ a bit. My surgery was done laproscopically, and I spent one night at the hospital.
