Positive for Sleep Apnea
I just got the phone call. I'm positive for sleep apnea! I have my Sleep Study #2 test on Monday the 24th. Yuck! Well, at least it's considered a co-morbidity. Therefore, Tricare will give me less of a hard time as far as covering my surgery. Geez, no wonder I'm so darned tired all day long!
Happy Wednesday everyone!

Hi Jules:
I too was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I went for the 2nd sleep study and couldnt tolerate the mask that I was going to have to wear. I actually ended up leaving and didnt stay the night. I was still cleared by the sleep apnea Dr. to have the surgery without the CPAP and everything was fine.
Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Thanks everyone!
So, they actually bring the cpap to your home? How often is the follow-up? Will the sleep apnea go away once I lose weight? Who pays for it? Can I still sleep on my stomach while wearing the mask? Is the machine noisy?
I know...so many questions...so little time.
Thanks for YOUR time! Jules
The sleep apnea most likely will go away once you lose weight, but some people just have it, overweight or not. The mask is pretty big so sleeping on your stomach might not be an option. The mask goes over either just your nose, or your nose and mouth and it is strapped around your head. I wouldnt say that the machine is noisy, it is air blowing in your face. Think riding a bike...the air is blowing in your mouth and nose...thats what the CPAP does.

Hi Jules,
I just started using my CPap machine a little over two weeks ago. I got used to it pretty quickly. When I went for my second sleep study they let me check out a bunch of different types of masks, including the type I choose. I have one that just has what they call nostril pillows (?), instead of getting an over the mouth and nose or nose mask. This one has straps to go over the top of your head, but has a little connection that just gets placed at your nostrils (kind of hard for me to explain). So far it's worked out ok, because I don't seem to open my mouth when I sleep. With this type of "mask" I can still sleep on my stomach, which is my preferred way to sleep. The only problem with the nostril thing is that sometimes first thing in the morning my nostril feel a little sensitive. As to noise, it's no worse then having a fan/ air conditioner or humidifier running in your bedroom. So if your ok with that kind of white noise sounds the CPap machine shouldn't bother you too much.
GOOD LUCK!!
Lissa
