Psych eval completed today

I had my psych eval today and it was by far the weirdest therapy session I have ever had.  I spent 11 yrs in therapy back in the late 80's thru the 90's.  I participated in private one-on-one counseling and two groups.  I have never experienced what I went thru today.  If I got to speak for 5 minutes of the 45-50 I was in there, that was a lot.  He did tell me he was approving me for the surgery, so at least that, and hopefully I never have to see him again.  He just talked and talked and talked...gave me a long reading list..with things on it such as "The Four Agreements" (which I've already read and own), "That's Not What I Meant!" by Deborah Tannen, "The Celestine Prophesy", by James Redfield, "Eat Pray Love", and told me to watch "The Bridges of Madison County". He spent a bunch of time explaining to me what a Bodhisattva is (I've read a lot of Buddhism, and practice some....but didn't expect it to be preached to me in therapy).  He told me he wanted to prescribe Zoloft for me...after seeing me once, and him doing all the talking.  I told him no thanks. Look, somewhere down the road, I may decide to get some help dealing with my emotions  after surgery...But it won't be from him!  Totally weird...and again, I am not new to therapy.  I loved my therapist (who I saw when I lived in Nashville).  The only reason I saw this guy was because my insurance didn't cover the ones recommended by my surgeon.   I just needed to vent..thanks for reading along.  I had to hit the gym when I left him,  to work out the emotions I was feeling from all that.  What a trip!!  Ok, one more visit down...tomorrow...on to the cardiologist!

I just went back and read some of your old posts about the psych eval and now I am regretting not just going to the docs you saw and paying the difference...I honestly feel cheated by my experience today.  I know some people were dreading the psych eval ,but I wasn't..and was actually looking forward to it.  What a disappointment this was.  Oh well, if Dr Pohl feels that the experience wasn't enough for me to be approved, I will go back and see one of his recommended docs.  ::sigh::

Hi Cara,

I have to say that the psych eval was the longest and worst of all my pre-op testing.   The first part, your right, the gentlman talked and talked and.......  The second half the lady, Psychiatrist was rude.  Needless to say, I got through it.  I would not want to go to the lady psychiatrist for any counseling because she is not very friendly.   Thank God you made it through.

Robin, sorry your appt was so rough.  I am taking a step back and also taking the ball back into my own court and going with my guts on this one.  I have set up a different appt with someone else, and will be sure that I get what I need as well as what I deserve.

Hi-

I'm glad that you are working your way through this process the way you are - really learning from it.

I do have a suggestion for you, I dont know what medical coverage you have, but I called the office that Dr G and Dr Pohl use for their Psych eval's and they told me that I was not covered, however, after a few more phone calls to my insurance company I was covered. Chris in the Psych's office made me sign a waiver that if my medical wouldnt pay, that I would pay in full, I did that and after my visit, they submitted the bill to my insurance and it was paid in full by them with no problem.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Well, the more I thought about this today, the more it bugged me...Didn't even mention that the doc told me to forget the surgery and take a Reiki class, cos it was only $300 and would work better at keeping my weight off after two yrs, where I would probably just gain it back at this rate. Anyway, I called Dr Pohl's office and explained the whole thing, and they recommended a couple other doc to call, after calling my insurance co to find out if they would pay outside of the network.  I have Aetna, and they are tough.  I decided to call Dr Freedman and schedule something with him....Just got off the phone with them and it was a wonderful conversation. I feel much much better, and will be seeing him soon.  I just felt concerned that the doc I saw this morning was so out there, that I would have to see someone else to get past Dr Pohl's requirements anyway.  So I am breathing much easier now. Thanks for your suggestion and for your support!

Hi Cara,

I heard excellent things about Dr. Friedman.   I think you will really like him.

I heart goes out to you Cara. I cannot believe you had to have that type of experience. When I was ready to go, I feared seeing the Psych., due to the fact that I am a Paranormal Investigator and knowing they would be asking about believing and speaking to ghosts and all that. When I finally had my Psych eval., I found it to be humorous to say the least. The dude I had to see before the actual Doc was great... he couldn't wait to end the whole question thing and close the book. Once he did, he was more interested in what I did. He is the one that recommended I be passed.. he told me prior. I was supposed to see Dr. Freedman, but saw another and he tortured me in that room for 15-30 minutes... had me balling my eyes out.     If this Looney approved you and Dr. Pohl is willing to except his decision, then let it be... take it for what its worth. You went through enough to get that answer from this guy.
