So how does this go? Where does the money come from? Is it your unemployment money? Is it different?   What are the questions that get asked?

Hi Dawn,

Generally it is taken out of your pay through your employer.  It is different from Unemployment in that it is medical related and you don't have to worry about claiming it on next years taxes as income.  You can call the TDI office when the time comes and let them know you want to file a claim.

Dawn, Because you are asking where does the money comes from, I'm wondering if it has ever come out of your paycheck (weekly)? Most people are surprised when they see the extra money coming out of their check and usually question about it. Most, if not all(?) companies in RI have it. It is a short term disability insurance, they pay you by how much you have paid into it.. You need to file a claim with them once you are out of work, they will send you the paperwork both you and your doctor will need to fill out.  My X was on it years ago so some things might have changed since then.

TDI comes out of our paychecks....there are a bunch of rules surrounding when you can actually start with your TDI claim.  So give them a call....

All I know is I was out of work for six days and they will only pay for anything after the fifth day. So I ended up losing a whole week anyway.

Ok. So most employers take out TDI in every paycheck. My check says SDI (???????) and each one is different... like one is 3.42 and another is 6.68, and 1.06.  Does this mean that I am only getting that????? Even a whole year doesn't add up to a full pay for me for one week!

SDI usually stands for "short term disablity insurance". TDI stands for "Temp. disablity insurance".  If I remember correctly...the deducted amount is always different, just like your SS, FICA, state are always different.

Another thing I didn't mention but Lauren did...there is a clause, they don't pay until you are out for so many days.  It deosn't matter how much you've paid in during a 1 yr period...it's all together. If you've been paying for the last 5 yrs...it's tallied up by the 5 yrs but they don't give you every dime you've paid in. I know when my X got his paperwork in...it said the weekly amount and for how long (weeks) he will get paid for, providing he has not gone back to work yet. Also, paperwork had to be submitted every so many weeks.  The best thing to do is call and ask now...the sooner the better. If you are accepted...it takes weeks to get that 1st check, then they come weekly.
