Protein!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, here is the deal.  I try so hard to get all this darn protein in and I just cant seem to do it.  I am not hungry all the time, and when I am I dont always run for a cheese stick or a slice of lunch meat.  I need to find some snacks that are going to be good for me and up those protein numbers.  I did discover today the Southbeach bars,  OMG  they are WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  10 grams of pritein per bar.  That is pretty good.  I know I could be using the shakes in between meals, but to be honest, I just cant get them down.  I think it was tooo long on pureed.  Whenever I go to drink them, my throat closes up.  I like the taste of the Slimfast ones.  They are really good, I just hate drinking them. When I look at the Eating Good in Our Neighborhood, I also notice that it does not look like we all are eating enough protein.  Here is what I think we should do.  The eating good journal has been helping me out, ALOT, (even though I do not post daily) but not enough.  Could we maybe try to tally our protein and add it to our post daily.  Maybe if we see the numbers, we can help each other with ideas on how to get in more protein.  There are a lot of new Pre-Ops here in RI, and I am sure it would not hurt any of us to try to use our "tool" as best as we can. I hope I did not offend anyone, I just want some help and I hope I can help someone else along the way.. Thanks alot, you all are great!!!!! jen

Oh yeah, if and when you do eat protein bars, watch the sugar content along with the sugar alcohol content. High amounts lead to dumping  OFM

Thanks.  Dont want to dump, 1 bad experience was enough for me.  I did really well with it today, I thought I finally found the trick I needed.  I am sure I will try it again.  Thanks again.. jen

ok- aside from being pre-op and not too knowledgable about what is out there, I am also blonde, so you have to cut me a lot of slack(lol).  I know there is a fiber powder that is a no-taste, etc addative to foods.  Is there a protien powder like this?  Can you cook up some veggies and sprinkle some magic protien additive on it?  I am sure it would be benificial to get it in a natural way, but rather than overeat, is there a suppliment?

You can try things like soy crisps between meals - they came in many flavors and can be found in all the major supermarkets (mostly in the organic/natural section).  The South Beach meal replacement bar is also pretty good, it has 19 g of protein and very little, if any, sugar. (BTW, I've been eating protein bars since about 2 months after surgery and have never had a problem, but check with your surgeon to make sure). There is a product called Any Whey that you can get at GNC, it is unflavored protein powder that you add to yogurt, pudding, soups and other recipes. I use it to make peanut butter balls (1 cup natural PB - I use crunchy, 1 cup old fashioned oats, 1 scoop unflavored protein powder, 1/4 cup Splenda...mix all together and roll into small balls, store in fridge) and I used to put it in oatmeal and yogurt when I was newly post-op. Kashi Go Lean cereal is high-protein, low sugar, and can be eaten dry as a snack. Also, edamame (soy beans) are a good source of protein. I buy the shelled ones in the refrigerated section of Whole Foods, but they are in the frozen section of most markets.

Hope that helps!

Thanks soooo much.  I love soy beans, had some today with lunch.  I will try the South Beach bars too.  I have heard a lot of good things about the South beach products. Thanks a bunch, Jen
