Hi everyone, Hope everyone had a great christmas and will have a wonderful new year.  I've been off the boards for a while but now I'm back.  Still waiting for my surgery date and finally had my last test.  Everything so far had come back ok except the last test  which was a motility test to see how well I swallowed food.   From what I was told to have the lap/RNY you have to swallow food fairly fast or it will get stuck and you could choke.  Strange as it sounds I had the test to make sure I didn't have a problem which one previous test said I might. Well, it turns out I have a problem swallowing. Don't understand how since I obviously didn't have a problem eating food all these years.  Anyway because of this test I cannot have RNY which was my plan or even lap band due to the choking issue that is very possible because of these test results..  The only procedure I  was told by Dr. Roye's office I could have  is the BPD otherwise know as Biliopancreatic Diversion procedure. I have been researching as much as I can about this but would like to hear from anyone in RI who may have had it or know of someone who has.  I will be talking to Dr. Roye on Jan 4th to find out as much as I can.  I am confused  about one thing ( if anyone can clarify I would apprciate it) as to the difference with the BPD and the BPD/DS.  Dr. Royes nurse didn't know if he does the DS she only refers to the surgery as BPD.  Is one better than the other? I have a lot to think about and would really like as much help from everyone as possible.  I was so looking forward to my RNY but I now have to consider something else. Hope to hear from you ASAP.  Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi Sue,

A great book to get a lot of information from is Weight Loss For Dummies.    Here is a brief discription of what Biliopancreatic Diversion is: "a procedure in which part of the stomach is actually removed, and an intstinal bypass is performed.  The biliopancreatic diversion can be performed in two ways, and the difference between the two procedures lise in which part of the stomach is removed".

The Biliopancreatic Diversion - the lower part of the stomach is removed, and the remaining stomcah is hooked up to the part of the small instestines that is closer to the colon known as the ileum.

The Biliopancreatic Diversion With Duodenal Switch - the outer curve of the stomach is removed,a nd the frist part of the small intestines is hooked up to the ileum (colon).

Here's a brief description of the two.   I hope this helps.
