I met with Dr.  Giovanni yeaterday!!!!!  She is so incredibly nice!!  She told me that I was a perfect candidate for the lap band surgery.  I have done all of those pre testing things and everything is looking good.  They are just waiting for the endoscopy report and then they will submit to insurance.  They told me that could take up to 2 weeks.  I feel bad for my mom though.  We wanted to go through this together but her BMI is only 34.

I went back to work after the appointment and told a few people that I was going to have the Lap Band and of course most of them were very negative about it.  Its amazing that the person who is most supportive of me having this is one of my best friends who weighs about 95 pounds!  Most people look at me like "well if you just stop eating then you'll be fine". Does anyone have any advice about how I can deal with these ignorant people?  Well Im not going to let them bring me down.  Its not their decision, Its mine........(but if anyone has advice...I'll take it!!!)

The best advice I could give you is tell only the ones that need to know. You can't change people or the way they react. Sometimes people are negative out of jealousy, others just think they are jack of all trades so of course they know all the answers.  Ignore all the negativity..you don't need it. It's your life and your decision.  Good luck!

I have Dr. G.  She is wonderful.  My surgery is Dec 14 and I am having a tough time telling people too.  I am self-employed, so I don't have to worry about workplace gossip, but I do have a very large circle of friends, they are the ones I am having a problem with.  They may have an inkling of what's going on, but I'm not sure I want to tell everyone.   I have support from my husband, brother and a cousin.  I might just stop there.  I had some of my testing done at my local hospital (my sister in law, brother in law both work there, along with 2 or 3 good friends)  HIPA means nothing to them. I'm sure that they are gossiping as we speak.  Not sure what to do.  I haven't gotten any negative feedback, just a few strange stares.   CREEPY......   Best of Luck Tina

I wouldn't share too much.  No one but my husband and two of his best friends who are very supportive to our family knows that I had the Surgery.  I didn't even tell my mom.  She's a worrier.  I took my vacation time for my surgery so I didn't have to tell co-workers.  One  other person in my office had a lap band and she's having a hard time food restrictions and everyone always asks her "Are You Supposed to Eat That?"  so thats why I chose not to share.   Tune out the negativity.  You are doing something to improve your health. Good Luck

The thing is, you are sharing information, not asking opinions.  If you choose to tell people at all, and they get snotty and negative, repeat to them that you were merely sharing information.  this is a hard decision to come to.  It isn't one taken lightly.  If you could have just eaten less, you would be a twig.  A strong person realizes when they need help.  This is the tool you have decided will help you best.  If you didn't need it, the doctor would have sent you home.  They are too busy to deal with people who they know will fail when it comes to insurance approval.  Don't listen to the nay-sayers.  You are doing the right thing!
