Hey Everyone! Dr. Ryder is great! BUT...I was so excited to have made up my mind to have the Lap Band and she wants me to seriously consider RNY. Now I dont know what to do. I have 4 kids that need me around. I have only heard the stories of death resulting from RNY or near death complications after. What should I do????? She won't submit anything to BC/BS till I have made up my mind and considered both options. I need help here! Marie

It is something only you should decide- though, with medical guidance.  Consider why she suggested it, was it just her preference or something medically that she felt it would be a better option?  Check into both thoroughly before making a final decision- you have to go with what is right for you.  I wish you the best with your desicion- I know a few people here have had thier hearts set an a procedure, and then the Dr advised against it or wouldn't do it due to medical conditions.

I agree. It's only something you can decide for yourself. Just a slight notation about your fear of RNY. I think it would be best if you research it and see what it's all about first before making that decision. I do know, RNY does not even come close to the death rate of many years ago. In fact, it's less than 1% now and complications are minimal. They've come a long way in Medical Technology.    A way for you to get your own statistics is, post a question on the Main Forum asking if anyone had major complications during an RNY surgery... you get get answers & opinions. Good Luck! ~Dawn

Hi Marie, I changed my mind from lap band to RNY and here's my reasoning; the lap band has a much slower rate of weight loss.  I have medical issues that need to be addressed by weight loss that could go faster. the lap band allows for 3, maybe 4 fills and that's it.  if you are not losing, you will need to look at other diet modifications. I know someone who has the poly cystic disease and has a lap band, and I had no idea she had a lap band, she is so large!  sometimes the medical conditions require a more drastic surgery I think.  But talk to your doctor! negative for me was the tube under the skin.  it skeeved me out RNY negative is the vitamins have to be taken life long.  I'd rather trade vitamins for the 6 meds I take daily now. RNY, while it is a very serious step, is one I'm willing to take for me, my husband, my marriage and my kids.  If I'm supposed to pass away as a result of the decision, I feel like it is my time to go and one way or another, I will go.  Ask your doctor tons of questions.  Go to the RI Hospital meetings.  Get all the information you can and make your decision that way.  Talk to anyone you can who has had either procedure, read, read, read and then talk to your doctor again.  Good luck.  We are here for you!
