Hi, Everyone I was wondering if you did your pre-op testing prior to getting your approval or did you have to wait for the approval?   Spoke with my surgeons office and told them I wanted the RNY.   The assistant said she give my surgeon the message and send out the paper work for approval.   Is that how it's usally done? Thanks

Approval first.  Once you are approved then the office should send you the list of testing.

Actually, I had the testing done first so that all the premorbids are indicated and the insurance company can make an informed decision.

After I attended Dr. Pohl's seminar, I called my insurance (BCBS at the time) to make sure the surgery was covered. After I spoke to them, I made all my pre-op testing appointments. My approval came through at some point while I was doing all the testing. I think it might depend on your insurance - some are better then others at fast approvals.  Hope that helps.

My doctor suggested that I start getting some tests done before approval.  Some tests need to wait until after.

I had my sleep study done before I met with surgeon.  I met with my primary care provider to discuss weight loss surgery and she told me that one thing they do is a sleep study - so she referred me to that first, this way the surgeon would have a "co-morbidity" to apply for approval with.

Working in the finance end of the hospital - I was able to check the costs of all the tests I had done.  It makes sense for insurance to give authorization first as the tests I had done we about $10,000-$12,000. Best of luck on your journey Pam

Thanks for your responses. I have already been diagnosed with sleep apnea and currently use the CPAP ma*****e nightly (wonder if I have to do the sleep study still) and I see the pulmanary doctor twice a year.   I have also been diagnosed with arthritis and erythema nodosum and I see the rheumatologist every three months because I am taking methotrexate.   I have United Healthcard and I am a State of Rhode Island Employee.

Dr. Ryder is in the same office as Dr. Roye they require that you get approval first.  I don't see why you would have to have another sleep study since you are being treated for Sleep Apnea.  It will make it easier for your insurance to approve you. Good Luck
