Hi Jen,

When you have your pre-op tests and when you arrive for your surgery the docs will go over this.  The wouldn't just surprise you.  It is always a possibility that they may have to keep the tube in if you are not breathing on you own. When I had my surgery my alergies were acting up that day, and when I talked with the doctors there was a risk of them having trouble getting me to breath on my own.  So I was prepared to have the tube still in after surgery.  I was lucky and when I woke up no tube. Hopefully you will not have any problems and wake up just sore. ...dave

It was a small tube & really didn't interfer with anything.  No one warned me about it.  I probably fell asleep before they finished all their pep talk. If my throat hadn't been so sore, I really would not have noticed it.  It was not connected to anything.  I could talk & swallow with no trouble except for the sore throat. The holes in my belly were of more concern.  The catheter was a welcome relief at the beginning, then it just got in the way.   And I had a pain control button.  Who could ask for more?  You've had 3 kids right?  This is a breeze. If for some reason they need to keep you intubated the doctor will proberly keep you sedated. They put a tube in you to allow the anesthesiologist to breath for you while the doctor operates. the tube is usually the size of your finger and about a foot or so long. Dont freak out

I made a mistake about my above post, I didnt read the entire post on the tube, it sound like it is a nasogastric tube they are very thin and inserted into the stomach they may cause nose bleeds, sinusitis, and a sore throat. but nothing to worry about.
