Exercise

Hi all, Looking for some advise here.  I'm trying to come up with a plan for exercising with the cool weather coming.  So far I have been doing a lot of walking, which has been working well, but I know that I need to find something for the winter. This week I checked out a local gym and did a free pass day.  I wasn't impressed.  I thought the place was a little dirty and the lighting was very dark.  As I was doing the treadmill I couldn't see myself going here on a regular basis.   So right now I see my choices of maybe checking out some other gyms/healthclubs.  There is a Ballys in N Providence which isn't too far from work.  Or my other thought was buying a good exercise bike and some free weights and use those during the cool/bad weather days.  Then go back to outside walking in the spring. So what do you guys think?  What kinds of exercise routines do you have? I'm really doing well and want to keep up the momentum! .....dave

Dear Dave, I think that the $ spent for a trainer is well worth it.  A trainer could give you some tips, set you up with a program, etc.  You could also meet  periodically to assess progress and/or revamp your program. Islander

Hi Dave, you are doing awesome!  I'm so happy you're feeling better, too.  As far as exercise goes, I belong to the Bally's in North Providence.  I like it there because it's clean (as gyms go I suppose) and there are lots of things to do.  I haven't done any machines but am planning on trying one of the bicycles.  I use the pool and do my own variety of water aerobics.  I was trying to get a water aerobics class going for evenings but they only offer afternoons.  Then they did try to get me to get a personal trainer for a ton of money.   Nah - I'll stick to the water.  I have bad knees and arthritis so the water suits me fine.  Good luck wherever you end up.  Oh, I finally got everything done and I have an appointment with Dr G on the 22nd.  I think that's when they will schedule my surgery.  Now I'm getting a bit anxious!  Talk to you soon.  Jules

I had posted a question like this on the mian board last week and someone said they walk at the mall during the winter months .. I hadn't thought about walking the mall.. it sounded like a good idea.

With the money I would spend at the mall, I could own the gym.  That is not an option for me...LOL

I know that the malls open early in the am for walkers.  It is a great alternative to walking outside in the inclimate weather.  I personally am trying to get my hubby to join the local YMCA with me.  Not only do they have a gym with macines, they have free swim where you can do laps (working out in the water adds so many more calories burned), they offer yoga, and a few other classes.  This is my local Ymca- and a rather small one- most do offer more- at a really reasonable rate too!  I suggest looking into it- and some health plans may even reinburse you for some or all of the costs.  I hope you find something you enjoy!

The Rhode Island Mall is great for walking.  There are NO people there because there are NO stores!!  Plus it has stairs that aren't too high to climb too.

With dedication, you really can't go wrong with investing into some home equipment.  The hardest thing for some is affording it and finding the room to keep it without having to move or pack it away.
